GRANTS FOR TEACHERS OF WRITING ––
Six grants of $2,000 will be awarded to exceptional
teachers of grades
6-12 for innovative methods to develop their students’
writing skills.
The College Board’s Bob Costas Grants for the Teaching
of Writing
support programs in or outside the classroom that
motivate students to strengthen their writing skills.
Teachers of all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

APPLY ONLINE NOW FOR PROFESSIONAL WRITING RETREAT ––
NWP is sponsoring two qualitatively different
professional writing
retreats this summer. The retreats highlight the value
of teachers writing about their practice and create
the time and support for this work.   Retreat A (June
14-17, 2007) serves participants who are in the
process of writing first drafts. Retreat B (August
2-5, 2007) is tailored to the needs of writers with a
completed draft who are ready to tackle final editing
and preparation for publication. Both retreats will be
held at Sunrise Springs in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Applications are due March 19, 2007.

NWP RESPONDS TO “WRITING NEXT” REPORT ––
NWP has issued a press release responding to the new
report on writing––Writing Next: Effective Strategies
to Improve Writing of Adolescents in Middle and High
School. This report, commissioned by Carnegie
Corporation of New York and published by the Alliance
for Excellent Education, presents eleven specific
teaching techniques that research suggests will help
improve the writing abilities of students, grades
4-12. You may wish to make use of the press release,
either at your university or with local media. Please

The Carnegie Corporation’s Advancing Literacy
Initiative provides
online resources that may be useful to NWP site
directors. The website links to resources about
adolescent literacy and public policy; family,
communities, and peers; standards and assessment; and
more. The NWP is listed under Carnegie’s efforts to
“support further research in how best to teach
adolescents, including English-language learners, the
skills of reading, comprehension, reasoning, and
writing.”
