Just one person's experience:
When I was in grad school, I was an officer in the
local equivalent of the SBDC, for two years.
The work I did on my dissertation? That stuff
I hardly ever use.
The skills I learned as an officer in a student
organization? I use that every single day in my
work.
In real life, soft skills -- knowing how to work
effectively with others, how to lead, etc -- are
worth far more than hard skills.
In fact, I can fairly say that, though I didn't
realize it at the time, being an officer in a
student organization was the single most important
thing I did in college.
Plus, if you do a great job, Horst and I are in a
good position to write you terrific letters of
recommendation for jobs, further study, etc.
That actually helped one of our former presidents
get into medical school.
