WSIS
COMMUNICATION RIGHTS: WSIS AND BEYOND
There is a scheduled 2nd Asian Civil Society Forum in
Bangkok (Nov. 21-25). For those who remember, the
first ACSF was a venue wherein some of us (Supinya,
myself, Adam Peake, Izumi Aizu) presented the Asian
Statement on WSIS developed in the first WACC/CRIS/BfA
workshop held also in Bangkok in 2002. (This was the
precursor of our own Manila workshop).

The World Intellectual Property Organization's
Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights is
undertaking a Treaty on the Protection of Broadcasting
Organizations. This treaty will confer upon the
transmitters of information a host of "related" or
"pseudo" copyrights that have the potential to trump
true copyright and restrict the flow of information on
the Internet.

APC’S LATEST ANNUAL REPORT: 2003 - THE YEAR TECHNOLOGY
POLICY BECAME SOCIAL POLICY
In spite of the wide range of activities that took
place during last year, for APC, 2003 is memorable for
one particular process that galvanised our efforts -
the World Summit on the Information Society which took
place in Geneva in December 2003. WSIS was a watershed
in public participation as information and
communications policy shifted from the obscure world
of techno-jargon to be recognised as social policy
that affects everyone. From APC's perspective as a
network of ‘social techies’ this was a major
break-through.
