NWP BUDGET UPDATE --
We have some encouraging news from Washington, DC. Funding of $25.6 million has been recommended for NWP for fiscal year 2011 by the Senate and House Appropriations Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies. The amount is the same as NWP's fiscal year 2010 appropriation.

This recommendation is a positive sign and a tribute to the high-quality work, strong leadership, and consistent outreach to legislators by site leaders and TCs across the NWP network. The budget must still go through several steps before it is approved. We will keep you updated as the final budget is decided.

START THE SCHOOL YEAR WITH A MESSAGE AND INVITATION TO YOUR LEGISLATORS --
This summer's outreach effort has generated letters and calls to members of Congress from across the country and several visits to sites by legislators. As the new school year begins, please let your legislators know about the fresh ideas and approaches you will bring to the classroom and how the Writing Project has helped your teaching practice. Please consider inviting your senators and representatives to visit your classroom, as members of Congress are on recess in their home districts until September 10. If a legislator has visited your site over the summer, please let us know by emailing [log in to unmask]

BACK-TO-SCHOOL PRESS RELEASE AVAILABLE FOR LOCAL USE --
