Hi everyone,

As you know, this past week was active on the federal front. As you know, Representative Miller (D-CA) circulated a Dear Colleague letter to increase the federal “set aside” for a competition for national non-profits from 1% to 5%. Signatures were to be collected through the end of the day Thursday.

What a great rally! We’ve heard from several House offices that your letters were getting through, and through, and through. We don’t have the full list of co-signers yet, but should get it next week. We will of course post it for you. (If you missed the announcement and want to catch up, check http://nwpworks.ning.com for the information.

At some point in the near future there should be a similar Dear Colleague letter in the Senate, so we’ll be letting you know when to get in touch with those offices when the letter develops. But don’t wait to contact offices to invite Members and aides to your summer events—you can do that to build relationships whenever you would like.

Otherwise, it was a busy week here in the office getting out lots of grant applications and preparing to say goodbye to the first wave of staff leaving on June 1. The talent, energy, and vision of your extraordinary national staff is amazing and a tribute to the importance of the work we have all done together. Keep us in your thoughts next week. Those of us remaining will be working to ensure the work continues into the future; your in our thoughts too.

In that vein, folks might enjoy this Thursday’s NWP Radio program which is a conversation with Jeff Wilhelm and Bruce Novak on their new book Teaching Literacy for Love and Wisdom. Their goal is to remind us of the importance of the teaching we are committed to. Find the show page here: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/nwp_radio/2011/05/26/a-conversation-with-jeff-wilhelm-and-bruce-novak

Happy weekend,

Elyse
