Subject: Resource article for young adults with disabilities

Good morning, Bonnie and Susan.

I just received this article written by a mother in the NYMAC region who
attended one of our consumer focus groups. While specific to Maryland, it
is probable that other states have similar resources.

Bonnie,
Please share it with the NYMAC Transiton Work Group members.

Susan, Lou, Kate,
You may also wish to share it with the National Work Group.

Talk with you next week

Kathy

                                       Conference

Dear Katherine,

Thank you for keeping me on your mailing list. We met at a conference in
Bethesda two years ago, when you were soliciting parental input. I've since
completed an article that I had been working at the time that I attach
here. It is Maryland specific, but the broad outlines are universal and I
tried to explain how the disability movement has evolved over the past 20
years.

Please circulate it as you see fit. I wrote it to clarify the issues for
myself. I'd be delighted to know other families might benefit from those
efforts. It is currently posted on several websites, and I include below
the blurb that Meg Grigal wrote about it.

I look forward to learning your reactions to it.

Best wishes,
Sari

After the School Bus Stops Coming... It’s Not As Scary As You Fear!
Entitlements to Eligibilities—for Young Adults with Disabilities—
Elucidated and Explained by Sari R. Hornstein, Ph.D.
This comprehensive article was written by a parent who was overwhelmed by
all of the different services and systems she faced as her son approached
the transition from school to adult life. It provides an overview of adult
services, descriptions of various employment and housing options in
Maryland, and has many valuable resources linked throughout. While the
details are specific to Maryland, the article explains how ideas pertaining
to work and housing for people with disabilities have evolved nationwide
over the past 20 years. This article is a wonderful resource for parents
and professionals alike.
