The National Conference on Media Reform, organized by Free Press, took place
November 7-9 in Madison, USA. The conference convened activists, academics,
policy experts and politicians to discuss the democratization of media
reform processes in the U.S.

From: Martha Wallner [mailto:[log in to unmask]]

Dear All,

This account, while leaving out many threads of the conference, provides
folks who could not attend some perspectives and news about what happened. I
did attend the conference but liked hearing how others, from different
vantage points experienced it. Also provides good links to news coverage of
the conference.

One of the most dynamic aspects of the conference was the debut of the Media
Justice Network - a delegation of about 20 people came from grassroots media
justice organizations (these are listed in the blog cited above) from around
the country, held one panel presentation and several briefings. There were
also several ad hoc caucuses for "white allies" where we discussed how to
support media justice work and our own critiques of the framing of many of
the issues and strategies in the name of "media reform." We are hoping to
draft a statement about this in the coming days and will post on this list.

The media justice network folks had a retreat on Monday, yesterday, the day
after the conference and I imagine more news of their future steps,
including a 2004 Media Justice summit should surface soon. In the meantime
you can find a first manifesto at:

Energized from the Madison gathering,
