New call for papers: The Journal "Transformations" seeks submissions from
authors for its forthcoming issue on:

Media Communities: Local Voices
(submissions due 30th October, 2003)

There is an increasing trend worldwide to what has been variously
termed 'local' or 'community' media forms. Recent work by
international scholars such as Clemencia Rodriguez and Nick Couldry
suggests a genuine shift away from mass-market and global media
forms in favour of more grassroots and community-based media outlets
which enable participation by community members. The notion of a
citizens' media (Rodriguez, 2001) - also termed radical media,
alternative media, or community media - is the focus of this issue.

The editors welcome papers which explore case studies in community
and alternative media forms, and which draw links between these
media and the communities in which they operate. Related to this
notion of community media is the implication such media forms have
for civic life, through their unique ability to enable 'ordinary'
citizens to access, and indeed participate in and produce,
information for their communities. Papers examining the impact of
community and alternative media forms on definitions of journalism
are encouraged. Potential contributors are urged to examine
theoretical concepts which may contribute to an enhanced
understanding and evaluation of the growing concept of a citizens'
media.
