 “The Amazing Writing Race”
2006 Fall Writing Marathon
for K-5 Students and their Teachers
Tuesday, October 10, 2006
Oklahoma City Zoo

The Oklahoma Writing Project invites you to attend
“The Amazing Writing Race”. Each teacher may bring 5
students, all grades, K-5. (Sorry, space limits us to
no more than 5.) Parents and student teachers are
welcome, too.

Students and teachers will be challenged to write
poetry, personal narratives, descriptive paragraphs
and short stories while racing around the zoo looking
for writing prompts. Oklahoma Writing Project Teacher
Consultants will be placed at each writing challenge
checkpoint to guide participants. Teachers will
accompany their students as they race around the zoo
attempting to complete all writing prompts. All
students and teachers will leave with a rough draft of
at least one piece they may enter in the 2007 OWP
Writing Contest for Students and Teachers.

In the afternoon, everyone will attend a joint session
to have a readaround. Students and teachers will
share pieces written during the race. At this time,
“The Amazing Writing Race” will offer one last
challenge to all participants. Come and be a part of
this exciting day!

Students and teachers will need to bring a sack lunch.
Due to all the writing prompts during the day, you
will stop to eat lunch between writing challenges.
(During the fall, many of the usual concession stands
are closed at the zoo. Bringing your own sack lunch
is recommended.) We will be outside all day; be sure
to dress appropriately. Students and teachers will be
provided with a folder, paper, and pencils. You may
bring clipboards to assist with writing.
