Hi Pam,
Iowa just passed legislation for a task force to study postnatal tissue and fluid banking. This would be storage for research, not public use. We explored the banking for public use, but after talking with some of the existing programs (including St. Louis and Texas), it was going to be cost prohibitive for us.

Subject: Question about Public Cord Blood Banks



        Are there any State Health Departments involved in the oversight and/or administration of a Public Cord Blood Bank? Oklahoma currently has legislation being considered to "pass" money through the health department to the Oklahoma Blood Institute to set up a public cord blood bank.

        I would like to talk with any Health Department staff that have been involved in the establishment and/or administration of a public cord blood bank.
