TECHNOLOGY GRANTS NOW AVAILABLE TO SITES ––
As part of the NWP Technology Initiative, writing
project sites are
invited to submit proposals for seed funding to
develop and expand
high-quality professional development opportunities
for teachers to support
the use of technology in writing and learning. Grants
of $15K will
support programming from July 1, 2005 to June 30,
2006. Funded sites will be
eligible in June 2006 to submit a renewal application
for a second year
at the same funding level. Proposal deadline: January
12, 2005.

APPLY NOW FOR SPECIAL-FOCUS NETWORK MINIGRANTS ––
The English Language Learners, Rural Sites, Teacher
Inquiry
Communities, and Urban Sites networks offer minigrant
opportunities to strengthen
sites’ work in areas identified by the networks as
part of their
mission. Funds provide modest support for projects
that promote leadership,
networking, and innovation among teachers and sites to
support student
learning and writing. Apply online by January 12,
2005.

TIME TO JOIN OR RENEW MEMBERSHIP IN SPECIAL-FOCUS
NETWORKS ––
NWP special-focus networks invite writing project
sites to become
members or to renew their membership in the English
Language Learners
Network, Rural Sites Network, Teacher Inquiry
Communities Network, and Urban
Sites Network. Sites must be members to be eligible
for 2005-2006
minigrants.

APPLY ONLINE NOW FOR PROFESSIONAL WRITING RETREAT ––
NWP is sponsoring two qualitatively different
professional writing
retreats this summer. The retreats highlight the value
of teachers writing
about their practice and create the time and support
for this work.
Retreat A (June 16-19, 2005) serves participants who
are in the process of
writing first drafts. Retreat B (June 23-26, 2005) is
tailored to the
needs of writers with a completed draft who are ready
to tackle final
editing and preparation for publication. Both retreats
will be held at
Sunrise Springs Inn and Retreat in Santa Fe, New
Mexico. Applications are
due Monday, March 7, 2005.

USA TODAY OPINION PIECE MAKES THE CASE FOR WRITING ––
Laura Vanderkam’s November 30 op-ed urges policymakers

give writing its due. “Writing a wrong: Too many
