Because of an invitation from Susana Hernández Araico to chair a panel at the 1981 Calderón conference at UCLA, I was fortunate to meet Julián Valbuena, a scholar that I admired a great deal. After getting to know him at that conference, I realized he was much more than a fine scholar; he was un caballero ejemplar, who taught students and colleagues using the best method possible--he set a fine example.

My condolences to his wife Barbara and his family.

Varios pésames respecto a Ángel Julián Valbuena Briones:

Since I met Julián in 1981 at the Calderón conference Mike McGaha and I organized at UCLA, he was a source of continuous professional support and warm friendship. I learned so much from all his publications and our conversations. I will never forget his kind invitation to lecture on Sor Juana at the University of Delaware and the very enjoyable visit my then-teenage son Eduardo and I had with Julián and his wife, Barbara. Yes, he was indeed a gentleman, as a professional calderonista and as a friend.
One of my articles, I dedicated to him (my article for the 1996 Coloquio Anglogermano at St. Andrews) in the following words: "Para Julián Valbuena, por su gentileza constante y ejemplar caballerosidad". Thank you, dear friend and colleague for your exemplary professional conduct! My deepest condolences to his wife, Barbara, and the entire family.
---Susana Hernández Araico

Coincido con tus palabras: era un hombre muy amable, un caballero de los que quedan pocos. Lo conocí en El Paso y siempre he respetado su gran labor como calderonista, de la que queda mucho por aprender.

Dear friends,

I received a note from Barbara Valbuena, announcing the passing (on February 5) of her husband, Professor Ángel Julián Valbuena Briones, a learned and kind man and a long-term member of the board of the Bulletin of the Comediantes. He was professor emeritus at the University of Delaware. Should you wish to write Barbara and the family a note, the e-mail address is [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

Sincerely,
Ed

Dear All,

We were all saddened to learn of Don Julián's passing. At dinner this evening, my Dad said fond memories of attending an NEH Summer Seminar taught by Don Julián in Delaware during 1960! Comforting to know that his legacy lives on...

All the best,

Amy (and Vern) Williamsen
