Resolution Condemning the Use of Sweatshop Labor to Produce OU Products

Whereas it is unethical to promote the use of sweatshop labor; which is defined as exploitive and unsafe labor;

Whereas companies the the University of Oklahoma has existing contracts with, including Kike and New Era, use sweatshop labor to produce products baring the OU logo as well as products used by OU atheletic teams;

Whereas the University of Oklahoma has a responsiblity to ensure that its products are made in a safe and non-exploitive environment;

Whereas because of this responsiblity OU must contract only with companies that have fair labor standards and refuse to use sweatshop labor;

Whereas the Workers' Rights Consortium is an independent organization that moniters companies' labor standards and provides its affliates with the information nessessary to contract only with companies that maintain fair labor standards.

Let it therefore be resolved that:

Sec. 1 OU should reconsider all contracts with companies that use sweatshop labor and take the steps nessessary to ensure that OU merchandise is not made with sweatshop labor.

Sec. 2 Ou should become an affiliate of the Workers' Rights Consortium, which would greatly aid OU in their effort to become sweatshop free.

Sec. 3 Copies of this resolution should be sent to the list (and Joe Castiglione, a representative of the OU atheletic dept.)
