FYI.... Jeter The Free Expression Policy Project (FEPP) invites applications for a one-year, full-time research fellowship in the area of artistic and intellectual freedom. The fellow will be responsible for developing and completing a major research project, to be published as a FEPP policy report. The fellow will also write commentaries for the FEPP Web site and complete shorter research assignments. Founded in 2000, FEPP's goal is to provide empirical research and policy development on tough censorship issues and promote free-speech friendly solutions to the concerns that drive censorship campaigns. FEPP believes that free expression can be threatened by corporate hegemony as well as by laws and other acts of government. We are not First Amendment "absolutists" and recognize that some speech is properly restricted (threats and harassment, for example). We also recognize that in some areas, such as copyright, there are free-expression interests on both sides of the debate. FEPP has produced two policy reports, Internet Filters: A Public Policy Report and Media Literacy: An Alternative to Censorship. See our Web site at www.fepproject.org for these and other materials, including friend-of-the-court briefs, commentaries, fact sheets, and book reviews. Applications should describe the proposed area of study, explain why it is important to free-expression policy, and outline a detailed research plan. Possible research areas are: ? arts and humanities funding ? copyright and free expression ? threats to arts, culture, and scholarship on the Internet ? school censorship and youth free expression rights ? political censorship, including the U.S.A. Patriot Act ? media consolidation as a threat to free expression values ? corporate control of academic research This list is not exclusive, and applicants are encouraged to propose other topics. Applicants should have a strong interest in free expression policy, first-rate research, analytical, and writing skills, and a background in media studies, arts and cultural policy, law, sociology, or political science. The fellowship pays $35,000 (with benefits) and can begin anytime between March 1 and September 1, 2003. Application materials must include: ? a 1,000-1,200-word description of your project, including an explanation of its importance for the development of free-expression policy, and a detailed research plan; ? a 15-20 page writing sample; ? a curriculum vitae; and ? two letters of recommendation. Send application materials by January 15, 2003 to: Marjorie Heins, Director, Free Expression Policy Project, 275 Seventh Ave. 9th fl., New York, NY 10001. FEPP is affiliated with the National Coalition Against Censorship, and is supported by the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Open Society Institute, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
