Dear Friend of Borders,

What does "essential" mean? We've been asking ourselves that=20
question a lot lately, as we choose the books, movies, and CDs=20
that will become BORDERS ESSENTIALS.=20

For me, an essential work of art is one that endures, that never=20
loses its power to captivate. Essentials grow with you. I vividly=20
remember the first time I read Ursula K. Le Guin's A WIZARD OF=20
EARTHSEA, one of the books we've deemed ESSENTIAL SCIENCE FICTION=20
& FANTASY. I remember how enchanted I was by the story, by the=20
richness of the world Le Guin created, and by the simple authority=20
of her language. Now when I read this book, I can appreciate Le=20
Guin's command of mythic forms and her ability to turn folkloric=20
archetypes into real people, while still enjoying her story as a=20
story. In a different but no less profound way, Maurice Sendak's=20
WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, one of our ESSENTIAL CHILDREN'S BOOKS,=20
remains a favorite of mine and of pretty much everybody I know.=20

An essential can be the perfect distillation of a moment in the=20
history of human thought, like Charles Darwin's THE ORIGIN OF=20
SPECIES, or a book that simply reflects changes in the way we=20
live, like THE JAMES BEARD COOKBOOK, which grace our ESSENTIAL=20
SCIENCE and ESSENTIAL COOKING lists, respectively. You'll find=20
these, plus U.S. History, Mystery, Business, and, of course,=20
Literature among our BOOK ESSENTIALS.=20

An essential can also be the key that unlocks a whole world of=20
expression and experience. I never liked jazz until my freshman=20
roommate played John Coltrane's BLUE TRAIN, one of our JAZZ=20
ESSENTIALS, for me; then I thought, "Ah, yes. Now I get it."=20
Whenever a friend says she doesn't like old movies, I invite her=20
over for a screening of SOME LIKE IT HOT, an absolutely flawless,=20
utterly timeless comedy that is one of our DVD ESSENTIALS.=20

Take a look at some HIGHLIGHTS of all the Borders Essentials. Many=20
of our choices are unquestionable, canonical works. Some of our=20
other picks might surprise you. We hope that they all delight you.=20

Take care,=20
Jessica Jernigan=20

TEENAGE TITAN -- You could say that 19-year-old jazz sensation=20
Peter Cincotti has the world on a string. The Columbia University=20
sophomore issues his self-titled DEBUT RECORDING on March 11. Sure=20
to generate comparisons with the work of Harry Connick, Jr., it's=20
layered with Cincotti's wise-beyond-his-years vocals and=20
top-flight ivory tinkling.=20

songs, many of which have graced the soundtracks of movies. Until=20
now, you would have needed to purchase 12 different CDs if you=20

dozen compositions that range from "Pass Me Not," featured in=20
Leap of Faith, to "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You?" from Kissing=20
Jessica Stein.=20

CLASSIC CORELLI -- Virtuoso violinist and composer Arcangelo=20
Corelli was a prominent figure in 17th-century Rome. On VIOLIN=20
SONATAS, OP. 5, Baroque music master Andrew Manze and=20
harpsichordist Richard Egarr once more align their exceptional=20
talents, immersing themselves in Corelli's daring material.=20

ALL THAT MATHERS -- Eminem, born Marshall Mathers, added=20
to his legacy when he took to the big screen to tell a loosely=20
autobiographical version of a life spent growing up near the=20
dividing line between Detroit and its suburbs. Zeroing in on one=20
crucial month, 8 MILE (available March 18) follows his onscreen=20
persona, Jimmy, a young factory worker fed up with his meager=20
paycheck and tough surroundings who is eager to ride his gift=20
with words to a better existence.=20

Dear Friend of Borders,<BR>
<BR>
What does "essential" mean? We've been asking ourselves that question a lot=
lately, as we choose the books, movies, and CDs that will become <A HREF=

<BR>
For me, an essential work of art is one that endures, that never loses its =
power to captivate. Essentials grow with you. I vividly remember the first =
time I read <B>Ursula K. Le Guin</B>'s <A HREF=3D"http://borders1.m0.net/m/=
s.asp?HB8419338646X2272644X167282X">A Wizard of Earthsea</A>, one of the bo=

nted I was by the story, by the richness of the world Le Guin created, and =
by the simple authority of her language. Now when I read this book, I can a=
ppreciate Le Guin's command of mythic forms and her ability to turn folklor=
ic archetypes into real people, while still enjoying her story as a story. =
In a different but no less profound way, <B>Maurice Sendak</B>'s <A HREF=3D=

An essential can also be the key that unlocks a whole world of expression a=
