POSITION DESCRIPTION

PRESS AND COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR
Health GAP (Global Access Project)

The primary responsibility of the press and communications coordinator is to
promote the goals and objectives of Health GAP and its campaigns in the
media. As part of a fast-paced, dynamic, media-savvy activist organization,
the Coordinator generates and implements press strategies, manages press
events, and develops public communication materials for web and print to
increase the visibility of Health GAP and to further its campaign goals.

Health GAP (Global Access Project) is a U.S.-based AIDS activist
organization dedicated to eliminating barriers to global access to
affordable life-sustaining medicines for people living with HIV/AIDS in
developing countries. Health GAP works with allies within the US and
internationally to increase access to AIDS and other essential medicines and
to secure the resources necessary to sustain access to medicines for all.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

*   Maximize media coverage of Health GAP's issues and activities in major
press outlets

*   Generate creative and effective organizational and campaign-specific
media strategies.

*   Maintain regular communications and cultivate relationships with media
outlets, nationally and internationally.

*   Pitch stories to reporters, editorial writers, and broadcast covering
Capitol Hill, the White House, international trade, health, business and
economics.

*   Write and distribute op-eds, press releases, public statements, and
background information.

*   Provide rapid responses to media on issues pertaining to AIDS treatment
access.

*   Fulfill media inquiries and direct reporters to Health GAP spokespeople.

*   Organize press conferences and reporters' conference calls.

*   Lead production of newsletters, web page content, and other campaign
materials.

*   Participate in biweekly conference calls and working group meetings, and
biannual meetings to discuss strategy and status of Health GAP campaigns and
corresponding media work.

REQUIREMENTS

*   Strong commitment to expanding access to HIV/AIDS treatment in
developing countries and to combating the AIDS pandemic in solidarity with
people in the global South.

*   Prior experience doing press work related to AIDS, globalization, public
health, social justice, and/or human rights. Experience with direct action a
plus.

*   Existing contacts with the media.

*   Excellent writing, communications, and strategic-planning skills.

*   High level of initiative, self-motivation and energy.

*   Willingness to travel within the US and internationally, as needed.

*   Live in or near New York City, Philadelphia, or Washington DC.

Compensation: Competitive salary and benefits.
