thanks to the folks at Johns Hopkins University, here's a nice piece of free software available for both Windows and Mac which allows you to create interactive Flash-based TIMELINES, with all kinds of nice features. best of all, you don't need to know or use Flash itself to create the timelines. here's a blurb from the website, http://timeline.cer.jhu.edu
This tool allows individuals without multimedia development skills to create an interactive timeline for teaching or presentation purposes that can be published on the World Wide Web or displayed directly from a computer. The interface can display up to six simultaneous timelines to compare and contrast various "events" with descriptive text and digital images.
You will find sample timelines posted here to get a sense of how the software works. There is not a lot of online help built into the program, but there is detailed documentation online.
