Faculty Opening in Critical Race/Ethnicity and Communication University of Washington The University of Washington seeks a tenure-track assistant professor in the area of race/ethnicity and communication in the Department of Communication. Our graduate and undergraduate programs are founded on the principles of intellectual and cultural pluralism, interdisciplinary theorizing, diverse methods of inquiry, public scholarship and community engagement, and innovation through collaboration among faculty and students. Building upon these core principles, Department faculty have identified seven areas of emphasis -- communication and culture; international communication; political communication; rhetoric and critical studies; social interaction; technology and society; and journalism. New faculty are expected to contribute significantly to at least one of these areas. Candidates should have interests in race/ethnicity and communication, defined broadly to include face-to-face, on-line, mediated, or mass-mediated contexts. Particular focus may include critical race theory; the social construction of race in relationship to issues of power; the shifting nature of conceptualizations of race; the enactment or challenging of racial conceptions through media representations, public discourse, or rhetoric; the ways in which cultural ideologies are constructed by, are reflective of, and/or contribute to communication about race; transnational or postcolonial analyses of race; anti-racist inter-cultural discourses; linkages among race and other "differences" such as gender or class; racialization, nationalism and diaspora; or the creation of identity (e.g., political, social) within groups that have been historically marginalized. The Department of Communication has plans for an interdisciplinary center on communication and issues of difference; our new colleague will play a central part in shaping that initiative. The Department of Communication was recognized in 2002-03 as a campus leader in the retention of under-represented minority students and includes several faculty who are involved in diversity-related research, teaching, and service. The University of Washington has a substantial institutional commitment to these issues. Faculty are expected to conduct research, teach 4 courses during a three-quarter academic year, and supervise graduate students at the master's and doctoral levels. Applicants must demonstrate a potential for excellence in research and teaching and the ability to contribute to the Department's curriculum. Experience mentoring students of under-represented groups would be highly valued. Candidates must have earned or be close to completion of a Ph.D. by September 2005, in a field related to the positions offered. Candidates should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, statement of research and teaching interests, copies of teaching evaluations, and three letters of recommendation. The start date for this position is September 16, 2005. Applications will be reviewed beginning October 15, 2004, and until the positions are filled.
