NWP SITE BULLETIN OCTOBER 7, 2004

NEW INFORMATION ABOUT CATALOG OF SCHOOL REFORM MODELS --
Some writing project site directors have recently asked about a change in the Catalog of School Reform Models. For the 2004 update, catalog developers made a decision to eliminate all programs with a single-subject focus (particularly those addressing reading or literacy), and therefore the writing project is no longer eligible for inclusion. NWP remains a program of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Innovation and Improvement and is fully funded for 2004-2005. As the catalog has never been a list of programs approved for use with CSR funds, schools and districts with such funding are still free to partner with writing project sites in their school reform efforts. For more information, visit the NWP website.

TITLE II PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES --
Writing project sites are finding new opportunities to conduct professional development programs in schools with Title II funding. To learn more about such opportunities, please visit the U.S. Department of Education website at the URL below and select the publication “Improving Teacher Quality Guidance.” Page 19 of this document includes a useful definition of “high-quality professional development,” and Section D provides helpful information about uses of Title II funding for professional development activities.

NEW REPORT ON WRITING IN THE WORKPLACE --
A new report on the importance of writing in the workplace, compiled by the National Commission on Writing, concludes that “writing is a ticket to professional opportunity.” The report summarizes a spring 2004 survey of 120 human resources directors across the nation. Read more, or download the report at the Commission website.
