Hello all--

Greetings and salutations! I have spoken with John several times and finally a plan has emerged for the workshop. Thanks so much to all who offered their input; it's wonderful to hear from so many people who are excited about dancing.

The best date for the workshop is Saturday, August 6th, two weeks from now. The hours will be from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. From input given by all, it sounds as though Salsa and Rumba would be good choices; I will teach each dance for one hour and fifteen minutes with a half-hour break in between. I plan to hang around for an additional half-hour, until 4:30, to answer individual questions and help people practice what they have learned. The cost is $25/person, and $45/couple.

There is one small issue; we have not yet located a venue for Norman. I welcome anyone's input for this. If for some reason we are unable to come up with something, the fallback plan is to hold the workshop at Harpe's in OKC. However, this is ONLY a fallback plan in case nothing pans out; I very much prefer to keep it convenient for the Norman dance enthusiasts. I also am interested in finding a permanent spot to teach in Norman as I already have some students who live there and travel to the city to take their lessons; this would also allow me to perhaps work regularly with all of you. But I am primarily concerned with the workshop, so any suggestions are welcome.

I suppose that a quick bio would be helpful as I do not know many of you...I have been teaching and competing professionally since 1992; I have most recently been competing in both the American Smooth and American Rhythm divisions. I teach both the American and International styles, all dances; I also teach West Coast and Country. I am not a specialist in any particular form, as I have always worked in competitive studios that required a broad-based knowledge of all dances and styles. I came to OKC two and a half years ago and originally worked for a contract studio in town; now I am teaching independently and am based at Harpe's.

I am looking forward to the workshop and to meeting all of you; from what John has told me, it sounds like a great group of people. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at this address; if you prefer to call me directly, my number is (405) 664-6692.

See you soon!

Kate

Subject: Dance workshop in Norman

 Hey Folks,
I have spoken to some of you about the idea of having a dance workshop in Norman taught by a professional dance instructor from Harpe?s Dance Studio (Kate Linkus). Some of you have met/know Kate. I am envisioning this to be about a 3-5 hour workshop that would cost somewhere between $20-35. For those who get frustrated with the cost of dancing, if you don?t realize it, this is a great deal. The cost for a private one on one, one-hour lesson with an instructor at Harpes? is about $40 give or take a little. I think that is a fair price compared to what they charge at some studios. I can?t tell you the price for the workshop yet because it will rather depend on what type of interest there is but that is what I am hoping for. The more that attend? the more attractive the fee will be. I am hoping this workshop will take place in about 4-5 weeks most likely on a Saturday or Sunday. How do the weekends of July 30, August 6, and August 13 look for you guys? (By the way, can someone tell me when OU resumes classes?) I am hoping this workshop will cater to the dancers who like to attend the intermediate level class taught by Graham through the Sooner Ballroom Dance Club. There seems to be a lot of group classes (for example, Henry?s class at SBDC) set up for beginners but not a lot for folks like us who have been dancing for a little while.
Kate and I are hoping this might be a chance for her to meet some of us, find out our needs, skill level, and if we would have interest in starting an actual weekly class somewhere in town at a reasonable rate. I am thinking this class might be like $5-10 per week again depending on the number of participants. My instructor at Harpe?s, Beth teaches a few eight-week dance classes for $50 per course. I wonder if something like that might be possible for us here in town. I have expressed to Kate that there are so many people in Norman who have interest in ballroom and Latin dancing. Look at how big the DanceMaker?s Monday classes are at the University? In case you are unaware, OU has three sections of the class and there are between 200-250 people in each section.
Kate needs to know just how many of us are interested in the workshop, what dance we would like the workshop to focus on, and when is the best time for a maximum number of us to do this, etc. Kate said that she would locate a forum/venue and let us know where it would take place. One of the main purposes for this workshop will be to create a forum to meet and discuss what we would like to see long term, if anything. Plus, I also know how we love to develop our skills and how often do we get this kind of opportunity in Norman? So?would you all please give Kate some feedback. Her e-mail is [log in to unmask] Mine is [log in to unmask] Also gentlemen, I have heard more interest so far on this matter from the ladies. Group discussion might encourage more ideas and participants. Thanks everyone. -John Hartmeyer
