Your sentiments are valued and taken to heart.  I agree. I'm just concerned because as we all know the media will exploit emotion and play it over and over again in or out of context. Today, the Mayor of New Orleans lost it on NPR. Now his emotions are being used against him.  Further, if we are to be educators we must inform.

That said, we really do have the same goal.

Peace,
Syb

I would suggest that empirical vs. qualitative is a matter of which tool to use not a matter of real vs. false.  I would hope that we would use a mixture of both because neither stands alone very well.  I would hope that we would not leave our emotion at the door but bring the right portion of it with us wherever we go, whatever we do…Some of my American Indian relations speak of one of the reasons the conquering people were not “human beings” was because they spoke from their heads instead of from their hearts as a “real human being” must to be in integrity.  I get where you are coming from but I worry about this language and these notions that reinforce western, non-indigenous ways of knowing/doing as the right/best/only way.

Hey Everyone,

Greetings from Music City, USA.  I was listening to our local National Public Radio affiliate this morning and heard a Professor discussing the White Flight that left New Orleans predominantly Black and poverty stricken.  Unfortunately, America has a history of allowing race and class to influence decisions.  This isn't the time to be petty or premature. However, it is critical that scholars with knowledge make their presence and availability known to the media. They are clamoring for people to interview.

So if you are knowledgeable on this plight and media savvy, please way in on the discussion.  Leave emotions at the door. Go straight empirical, there is a substantial body or literature to add to a better understanding of why so many were left behind.

Ironically, FOX News has given the most complete picture of the tragedy. For example, they have explained that many people didn't leave because they couldn't NOT because they wanted to stay.

Also, are there any experts on mass evacuations who can address why the city did not bus their poor people out or those in the hospital before the Hurricane struck?

Be deliberate in your responses.  You can e-mail or call major news outlets and they will hear your remarks.

Peace,
Sybril

Today many gas stations in Central AL are closed because they have no more gas.  Gas prices went up 80 cents/gal. in 12 hours yesterday.  Had some conflict with folks trying to get gas last night.  Scary…but not as scary as seeing tape of New Orleans under water…
