Dear Robert,

Would you announce the following symposium? Maybe some
people will be interested in attending it. Included is also the poster of the
conference.

Thank You,

“Cervantes /in/on/and the New World” Conference

On October 8-9, UMAss-Amherst, Amherst and Mount Holyoke will host a conference
on Cervantes and the New World. This conference will celebrate the 400th
anniversary of the publication of the first part of Miguel de Cervantes'
foundational novel, Don Quixote.  The conference will focus on aspects of the
Quixote itself and the text’s ongoing influence and reception in the Americas.

The conference will have as keynote speakers: Prof. Diana de Armas Wilson
(Denver Univ.), Tom Lathrop (Delaware Univ.) and Ilan Stavans (Amherst College).
Other participants are, for example, James Iffland (Boston University), Daniel
Eisenberg (Excelsior College), Mary Gaylord (Harvard University) and Alberto
Sandoval (Mount Holyoke College). The presentations will deal with topics such
as teaching Don Quijote in the US, Don Quijote in Spanglish, Don Quijote in
Broadway and the influence of Cervantes’s writings in contemporary writers of
the Americas. The symposium will close with a performance based on Don Quijote,
by the theatre group The Double Edge Ensemble, entitled The UnPossesed.

The conference is open to the public. The performance will be at the Double
Edge’s Farm—a bus will be leaving from Willitts Hallowell (MHC) at 6:30 on
Sunday 9 (space available for 25 people). For more information about the
conference, go to: http://www.people.umass.edu/arbesufe/cervantes/cervantes.htm
