Estimados colegas de NUESTROSMedios:
No he podido les he podido responder antes porque quería darme el tiempo para leer la propuesta de nuestros colegas en Australia presentada por Juan Salazar, el documento que circularan de Clemencia Rodríguez y Sergio Rodríguez, y otros mensajes relacionados a la red, para lo cual no había tenido tiempo porque me encontraba en plena mudanza de Brasil a Guatemala, y luego en continuos viajes durante los meses de Abril y Mayo. Sin embargo, le respondí a Juan ratificándole mi compromiso para ser parte del Comité Directivo Internacional, tal como me ofrecí para el congreso de Bangalore.
NUESTROSMedios 6 en Sydney
La propuesta desde Australia está – desde mi punto de vista – muy bien estructurada y es el resultado de acuerdos y coordinaciones previas de nuestros colegas y organizaciones en Australia, lo que es muy alentador y un gran avance en relación a experiencias pasadas. Estoy impresionado. Tenemos un esfuerzo conjunto de cuatro universidades de Australia, pienso que esto es extraordinario. Además de 11 organizaciones que han expresado interés en apoyar la conferencia, desde AMARC Asia a la Escuela de Comunicaciones Aplicadas RMIT. Todo esto reafirma mi opinión de que NUESTROSMedios 6 debería llevarse a cabo en Australia, y no porque no haya otra propuesta, sino por otras razones iguales de importantes: Nuestros colegas australianos han sido participes de la red de NUESTROSMedios desde sus comienzos; están bien organizados, motivados y trabajando a nivel mundial con iniciativas que enriquecen el significado de NUESTROSMedios.
El realizar la próxima conferencia en Australia es también un importante indicador del crecimiento y expansión de NUESTROSMedios, permitiendo que la red se reúna en una nueva región. Ya nos hemos reunido en América del Norte, Europa, América del Sur y Asia, así que este nuevo paso será más que bienvenido. El argumento de "muy lejos" ya fue vencido con NUESTROSMedios 5 en Bangalore. ¿Muy lejos para quien? Para que NUESTROSMedios sea considerada una red global de verdad, necesitamos desafiar nuestra visión centralista. Si algunos de nosotros no podemos asistir a Sydney, está bien, mientras que muchos otros colegas del Pacifico Sur y Asia puedan hacerlo. Los problemas de visa que algunos han mencionado son comunes a la mayor parte del mundo: no es fácil conseguir una visa para los Estados Unidos o Europa, para la mayoría de países. Dependiendo de que pasaporte tengamos, podremos tener dificultad en entrar a países de Asia, África y Latino América. Así que el factor de las visas es una realidad que debemos enfrentar. Cuanto antes se solicite la visa, mayores serán las posibilidades. Todos necesitaremos una invitación más formal por parte de la universidad anfitriona.
Juan ha realizado una gran labor trayendo frente a nosotros nuestras responsabilidades y compromisos. ¿Queremos contribuir a NUESTROSMedios 6? Entonces activemos el comité directivo internacional y los comités organizacionales locales, dentro del marco de tiempo mencionado en uno de sus mensajes. Sugiero que todos nos suscribamos a Skype (http://www.skype.com/intl/es/), intercambiemos nuestros nombres de Skype, y a través de este medio planeemos una reunión para el comité directivo internacional, con Juan como el enlace con el comité local.
Durante la organización de la conferencia en Bangalore de NUESTROSMedios 5, un tema importante fue el de financiamiento. Algunos colegas pensaron que NUESTROSMedios 5 estaba destinado a fracasar porque era el primer congreso que empezó sin financiamiento y el poco financiamiento que hubo se dio después por parte de los organizadores. Yo estoy involucrado - como director – con un grupo de trabajo en la organización de ALAIC (a llevarse a cabo el mes próximo en Brasil) y una vez más, no hay ningún financiamiento. Cada uno tiene que ver la mejor manera de llegar ahí, con el apoyo de sus instituciones o por sus propios medios. La mayoría de estas conferencias grandes se llevan a cabo porque la gente quiere que así sea. El financiamiento es cada vez más escaso, pero con una universidad ofreciendo facilidades para el encuentro, las cosas se hacen más fáciles.
Otro mito que se desmintió en Bangalore fue el de que tenemos que "casar" a NUESTROSMedios con una conferencia más "grande". Esto es sólo valido si para algunos colegas, NUESTROSMedios es sólo una actividad menor, y no una prioridad. Si ICA o IAMCR o alguna otra red es más importante que NUESTROSMedios, entonces resulta claro que no tengamos siempre las mismas caras alrededor nuestro. Pero NUESTROSMedios ha demostrado que no necesita colgarse de otra conferencia para existir. Empezamos como una "pre-conferencia" de una día y de ahí crecimos a dos días, tres días… Ahora somos una conferencia por nosotros mismos, sin ningún complejo de inferioridad. El único tema pendiente es el de priorizar, pero eso se lo dejo a que lo decida cada colega.
No entraré a los detalles de la propuesta de Australia, porque estos pueden ser discutidos con los miembros de ambos comités. El programa, el tema, los documentos, la logística, pueden definirse en el camino. El tema más importante ahora es el definir quienes están dispuestos a apoyar el proceso, uniéndose al comité directivo internacional. Algunos de nosotros nos ofrecimos para Bangalore y otros se unieron en el camino: Alfonso Gumucio (Communication for Social Change Consortium); Clemencia Rodriguez (University of Oklahoma); Jethro Pettit (Institute of Development Studies, Sussex University); Tripta Chandula (Queensland University of Technology); Elvira Truglia (World Social Justice, Montreal); Stefania Milan (IPS, London); Gaby Hadl, (Ritsumeikan University, Japan); Sergio Rodriguez (Geomar, Montreal). ¿Estaremos todos presentes esta vez? Tal vez el primer paso es levantar nuestras manos y decir: cuenten conmigo.
Dear colleagues of OURMedia:
I couldn't react much earlier to the whole group because I wanted to find the time and read the proposal from our colleagues in Australia submitted by Juan Salazar, the paper that Clemencia Rodriguez and Sergio Rodriguez circulated, and other messages related to the network, which I had not the time to read because of moving from Brazil to Guatemala, and then traveling intensively during April and May. I did however respond to Juan ratifying my commitment to be part of the International Steering Committee, as I had volunteered in
Bangalore.
OURMedia 6 in Sydney
The proposal from Australia is in my view very well crafted and is already the results of preliminary agreements between our colleagues from various organizations and universities in
Australia, which is very encouraging and a new great improvement from past experiences. I'm impressed. We have a joint effort from four universities of Australia, I think this is great. Plus 11 organizations that have expressed their interest in supporting the conference, from AMARC Asia to RMIT School of Applied Communication. All this confirms my belief that OURMedia 6 should take place in Australia, and not because there is no other proposal, but for other equally important reasons: our Australian colleagues have been participating in the OURMedia network from the beginning; they are well organized, motivated and working worldwide with initiatives that enrich the content of what OURMedia represents.
Having the next conference in Australia is also an important indicator of the growth and expansion of OURMedia, allowing the network to meet in a new region. We had met already in North America, Europe, South America and
Asia, so this new development should be more than welcome. Already with OURMedia 5 in Bangalore, the argument of "too far" was defeated. Too far from whom? For OURMedia to be a real global network, we need to challenge our own centralist approaches. If some of us will not make it to
Sydney, it's OK, as long as many other colleagues from the South Pacific and Asia can join. The issues of visa that some have mentioned, are now common to most of the world: not easy to get a visa to the US or Europe, for most of the countries. Depending on what passport we hold, we may have difficulties to enter countries of Asia, Africa, and
Latin America. So the visa factor is just a reality we have to face. The sooner we start with the visa request, the better. We will all need a more formal invitation from the university hosting the conference.
Juan has done great work to bring all of us in front of our responsibilities and commitment. Do we want to contribute towards OURMedia 6? Then let's activate the international steering and the local organizing committees, within the timeframe he has mentioned in one of his messages. I suggest we all get into Skype ( http://www.skype.com), exchange our Skype names, and then plan for a meeting of the international steering committee, with Juan as the link to the local organizing committee.
During the preparation of the OURMedia 5 conference in Bangalore, one important question raised was about funding. Some colleagues thought OURMedia 5 would fail to take place because it was the first meeting that started with zero funding and the little funding that the organizers got came later. I'm involved as chair of a Working Group in the preparation of the ALAIC conference next month in Brazil, and again, there is no funding. Each one has to manage to get there, with the support of his/her own academic institution or by her/his own means. Most of these large conferences happen because people want them to happen. Funding is increasingly scarce, but with a university offering the facilities to meet, things get much easier.
Another myth that was broken in Bangalore is that we have to "marry" OURMedia conferences with some "larger" conference. This is only valid if for some colleagues OURMedia is not a priority, just a minor activity. If ICA or IAMCR or any other network is more important than OURMedia, then it is clear that we may not have the same faces around every time. But OURMedia has shown already that we don't need to piggy-back on another conference to exist. We started as a one-day "pre-conference", and then we grew to two days, three days... We are now a conference on our own, without any complex of inferiority. The only remaining issue is prioritizing, but I leave that to each colleague to decide.
I will not get into the details of the proposal from Australia, because that can be discussed with the members of both committees. The programme, the themes, the papers, the logistics, can be refined as we go. The most important issue now is to know who is willing to support the process, joining the international steering committee.
