Hi Alfonso,
I was originally in favor of a governance structure but I tend to agree with you now - that it won't necessarily improve on the current model and might change the nature of the organization substantially. I look forward to more debate on the issue, however.
As far as funding goes, our strategy this year is to seek support from universities and the community media sector. This is partly because Australia is not usually eligible for aid money and we don't have a strong philanthropic culture like the US. But it is also because we feel that universities should be supporting this kind of endeavor. OURMedia has raised the profile of community media studies in the academy with great collaborative outcomes, including publications – all at the international level. Universities benefit financially from such research outcomes and should encourage networks like OM. Of course, OM has relevance and use beyond universities but if we can lever their support to the advantage of practice/advocacy etc. then so much the better. As our Education Minister said recently, 'knowledge transfer' (taking ideas beyond the confines of the university) is becoming increasingly important. (I am not sure that OM was what she had in mind, being from a conservative government, but I'll run with it anyhow!).
That said, if we can get philanthropic or NGO support it will be most welcome - it would assist us to bring practitioners from other countries to the conference, which we may not be able to do otherwise.
I have been astounded at the interest that this conference has attracted here in Australia. University departments have been approaching us to find out how they can be involved. And the community
broadcasting sector is very interested, particularly as it faces so many big issues around digitalization right now.

Yo estaba inicialmente a favor de una estructura más jerárquica, pero ahora tiendo a estar de acuerdo contigo – que no necesariamente mejorara el modelo actual y que podría cambiar de manera substancial la naturaleza de la organización. Sin embargo, estoy ansiosa de escuchar mas opiniones o de un debate sobre el tema.
En cuanto a financiamiento se refiere, nuestro objetivo este año es el de buscar apoyo de universidades y el sector de los medios comunitarios. Esto mayormente porque Australia no cualifica como país para recibir ayuda financiera y – a diferencia de EEUU – no tenemos una cultura filantrópica fuerte. Pero también porque sentimos que las universidades deberían apoyar este tipo de proyectos. NUESTROSMedios he elevado el perfil de los estudios de medios comunitarios en lo académico, con un gran resultado de colaboraciones que incluyen publicaciones – todas a nivel internacional. Las universidades se benefician financieramente de este tipo de investigaciones y por tanto deberían alentar a redes como NM. De hecho que NM tiene relevancia y utilidad mas allá de las universidades, pero si podemos usar su apoyo en beneficio de la practica/defensoría etc. entonces mucho mejor. Como nuestro ministro de educación dijera recientemente: la 'transferencia de conocimiento' (llevar las ideas mas allá de los confines de la universidad) está siendo cada vez más importante. (No estoy segura que NM sea lo que tenía en mente, siendo un gobierno conservador, pero ahí está la idea de todas maneras).
Con eso en mente, si pudiésemos conseguir ayuda filantrópica o de alguna ONG ésta sería más que bienvenida, nos ayudaría en los esfuerzos por traer a practicantes desde otros países a la conferencia, lo que tal vez no sea posible sin estos fondos. He quedado sorprendida con el interés que esta universidad ha causado aquí en Australia. Re presentantes de diferentes departamentos de la universidad se han acercado para preguntarnos cómo pueden involucrarse. Y la comunidad de medios está muy interesada, particularmente el sector de transmisión ya que enfrenta nuevas problemáticas relacionadas al tema de la digitalización.
Creo que aún aquellos de nosotros que no pudimos asistir a Bangalore aprendimos mucho de la experiencia, ya que las comunicaciones en la lista de correos fueron muy interesantes. Eso es algo que podríamos extender a NMVI – talvez reuniones en podcasts o ¿hacer un blog durante el evento? No soy muy buena en esas cosas, pero estoy segura que podemos encontrar mucha gente que ayude.
Ahora sólo voy a estar involucrada en el comité local, este al parecer seré muy útil. Pero gracias por la participación en comité internacional – es grandiosos tener su apoyo y experiencia.
