QST:

Look around at almost any VHF+ conference and you will see, primarily, a bun=
ch of "grey-beards". In the interest of trying to interest "new blood" in V=
HF+ weak signal Amateur Radio, please read the following:

The Central States VHF Society is inaugurating at this year's annual=20
conference a special program for VHF+ beginners. It is called the=20
"Getting Started in Weak Signal VHF/UHF Amateur Radio" program. =20
Our target is everyone from the just-licensed to the oldest ham who has=20
worked everything there is to work on HF and is looking for new horizons=20
in Amateur Radio.

The details of the overall CSVHFS conference can be seen at
http://www.csvhfs.org/conference/ and the specifics of the technical
program and Getting Started on VHF/UHF weak signal Amateur Radio are
broken out at http://www.csvhfs.org/conference/events.html#technical=20
and
http://www.csvhfs.org/conference/events.html#weaksignal respectively.

The Saturday-only "getting Started" session costs only $10 and includes=20
a "cheap yagi" (see http://www.vhfsouth.org/tutorials/chp-yagis.htm)=20
workshop in which attendees will actually build a functional yagi antenna=20
to take home with them. Information regarding what one can expect=20
from weak signal contacts in terms of distance and reliability, and what=20
it takes in terms of equipment and antennas to do weak signal=20
communications.

Text of a short "article" regarding the above is included below; please=20
consider sharing this with local clubs or folks you know to whom a=20
"getting Started" program might be of interest:

ARTICLE:

WANT TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND EXCITING IN HAM RADIO?
Would you believe you can work regularly over distances of 200+ miles on 2=
 meters?
You can, without going through any repeaters, by using SSB and other narro=
wband weak signal modes (FM is a wideband, strong signal mode).
Come to San Antonio this July and find out how you can join the fun on the=
 VHF and higher bands.=20
The Central States VHF Society (CSVHFS) has been devoted to operation on t=
he bands above 50 MHz since 1965. The 41st annual CSVHFS conference is bein=
g held in the Alamo City this July. Details can be found at http://www.csvh=
fs.org/conference/. These conferences are held every year somewhere around=20=
the U.S. or in nearby Canada; it hasn't been held in Texas in 6 years and no=
t in south Texas since 1992. Not only will this year's meeting be in south=20=
Texas, but something new is being added, and that's for hams who might have=20=
heard a little about narrowband operations on the VHF and higher bands and a=
re possibly considered trying it, but just haven't done it yet.
All CSVHFS conferences feature talks on various aspects of VHF, UHF and mi=
crowave operation and offer a range to test the gain of antennas as well as=20=
equipment to measure performance of low noise preamplifiers and, this year,=20=
passive devices such as filters, dummy loads. etc.
THIS year something new is being added, and it's especially geared to thos=
e who might be interested in trying the VHF, UHF and microwave bands.
It's a special session to be held Saturday July 28 from 8: 00 AM until 4:0=
0 PM, called "Getting Started in Weak Signal VHF/UHF Amateur Radio". Fellow=
hams, who have been on the bands above 50 MHz for years, will outline the e=
quipment needed (some of which many hams already have in their shacks), what=
can be expected from various types of stations and most of all, the thrill=20=
to be had covering distances thought only workable on the HF bands. There w=
ill even be instruction and material available for attendees to build a simp=
le Yagi antenna that can be taken home and put to work.
We hope to see a lot of hams who haven't yet ventured into the bands about=
50 MHz, except perhaps on FM, in San Antonio July 28. We'll be looking for=
them on 2 meters and other of the VHF/UHF bands before long.
For information about CSVHFS conference registration, please go to http://=
www.csvhfs.org/conference/registration.html
 =20
Thanks for your time, folks!

Note also that we have some room reservations at $87/night at the=20
conference hotel available for transfer. This is luxury hotel, folks, and=20
$87 is an extraordinary value. Please=20
see http://www.csvhfs.org/conference/lodging.html for details.
