Journalism Education Seminar Seeks Philadelphia Teachers

PHILADELPHIA (Sept. 5, 2007)--The Sixth Outreach Academy of
Journalism Education Association at Philadelphia this fall is taking a
bold step devoted to training Philadelphia-area teachers in advising and
starting school newspapers, yearbooks, broadcast and online media.

The goal is to train 30 teachers in the City of Brotherly Love
on Nov. 7 and 8 before the fall Journalism Education
Association/National Scholastic Press Association convention revs up.
Philadelphians will attend on the first day and teachers from farther
away on the second. The academy is a free, intensive seminar for
publications advisers who have five years or fewer advising experience
and/or teach in schools traditionally underrepresented in JEA
membership, especially low-income, urban and rural schools and those
with high minority populations.

"Philadelphia is a major city, which needs strong student media.
The Outreach Academy should be able to help advisers develop this
critical, consistent outlet for students," said Linda Shockley,
Philadelphia Outreach Academy chairperson and deputy director of the Dow
Jones Newspaper Fund.

"At the same time, other advisers will have the opportunity to
experience the Outreach Academy's rich tradition."

Academy participants receive free admission to the convention,
Nov. 8 to 11 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. Additionally, JEA
will pay $100 in substitute pay to each participant's school district.

The Newspaper Association of America Foundation has provided six
$500 fellowships to support travel and lodging for teachers who come
from a distance. The Newspaper Fund is offering two $500 fellowships.
Teachers from schools with economically disadvantaged students or
advisers of color will be given special consideration for these
fellowships. The Fund is also providing 10 convention scholarships for
students from the Philadelphia area.
