Opinion Writing for Media Scholars
Seminar starts May 14
The SPIN Project invites scholars who write about media in relation to race,
public policy or social justice to participate in a four-part seminar on op-ed
writing led by author and journalist Catherine Orenstein of The Op-Ed Project.
A key focus is on seeing the big picture – establishing yourself as part
of a larger public conversation about media in relation to law, policy,
democracy, human rights, globalism, or another narrative anchor of your choosing.
After three highly successful seminar series in 2007 and early 2008, The SPIN
Project has just added another series for May/June.
The 4 two-hour seminars will take place
by telephone in May and June 2008 on the following dates:
* Wednesday, May 14 – 9amPST/NoonEST: Op-Ed structure,
purpose & basics. Discussion of your ideas and expertise.
* Wednesday, May 21 – 9amPST/NoonEST: Building blocks.
Pitching.
* Wednesday, May 28 – 9amPST/NoonEST: Self-editing.
Making an impact.
* Wednesday, June 4 – 9amPST/NoonEST: Voice. The big
picture.
This seminar is funded by a grant to the SPIN Project from the Ford Foundation.
Catherine Orenstein is currently spearheading The Op-Ed Project with support
from the Woodhull Institute for Ethical Leadership.
There is no registration fee for the seminar series. The application process is
competitive but brief. For the online
application, go to https://secure.spinproject.org/modinput4.php?modin=103
Here's what another media scholar had to say about their experience with the
seminar:
"Thanks so much for this class. I am finding it to be probably the most
valuable class I have taken as a professional!"
