I concur that the scholarship fund should be an agenda item for the MAC
business meeting this summer, though a membership increase may not be
necessary to increase MAC's commitment to the scholarship. Also, I
reiterate Dr. Lee's desire for MAC to participate more prominently in the
scholarship recipient selection process. Perhaps, MAC's leadership
could take on this initiative this year, or post a call for
volunteers.

quest for an inclusive field--not just the academic side but the industry

entitled: 40 Years After the Kerner Commission Report and Lee

Lee Barrow's prescience--there's a good chance
that an inclusive AEJ would not have come to pass because it took not
only vision on Barrow's part but courage.
Last year, he shared with me a story about another giant in the
field--but on the industry side, Walter Cronkite. After Barrow
approached him on behalf of young people who needed funding for
internships, Cronkite responded several weeks later with a check for
$50. Barrow said he was shocked that someone of Cronkite's stature
and who called himself concerned about breaking barriers for black youth
would donate such a small amount--that was in the 1970s.
Federico--maybe you can calculate that adjusting for inflation--but off
the top of my head that is what $100 represents in 2009--to a man whose
life's work has touched us all.
Bradley made a suggestion, which I support. I also think that we
should discuss at the Boston meeting to give a set amount annually to the
scholarship fund even if it means raising the fees by some amount.
He was a great man and should be recognized as such.

I agree that a significant - at least $500 - donation to the scholarship
that carries his name is appropriate. I, too, was at the State of
the Division panel at AEJMC and was inspired by Dr. Barrow's account of
his efforts for AEJMC and MAC. I hope that AEJMC will at least
match whatever our division gives, since his efforts ultimately worked
for the betterment of all. He also made it clear that mass
communication education at the doctoral level still needs to be opened up
to a wider audience.

Dr. Lee mentioned during MAC's state of the division panel last summer that he would like for us to reclaim a leadership role in the scholarship selection process and funding. It was a humbling experience to hear MAC's history first-hand, as well as his aspirations for the division. I would like to see MAC make a more significant contribution to the scholarship fund, and to secure a matching contribution from AEJMC given his legacy and pivotal leadership for both. Consider this virtual discussion following the motion before it is put to a vote.

I move that we use MAC funds to send flowers or a donation of up to $100
to a charity of the Barrow's family choosing in honor of Dr. Lionel
Barrow, Jr.
Note: The 9/30/2008 balance in the MAC treasury was $5387.22

MAC members,
It is with great sorrow that I share the news of the passing of one of
the giants in journalism education, Dr. Lionel Barrow, Jr. Many of you
may already know of this sad news. I just posted a tribute with some of
my personal thoughts on my blog this morning.
