Meta — Appreciate if could you help spread the word of this online archive of African American newspapers to MAC members.

Can’t help but think Dr. Barrow would be proud to hear about this online collection and its scholarly possibilities.

Your mixer/jam party fund raiser is a great idea!  We had BIG Fun at the last one.

Graciously,

Sharon

Readex will begin releasing African American Newspapers, 1827-1998, in
fall 2009. This online newspaper collection will feature 270 newspapers
published in 36 states, including rare and historically significant
19th-century titles.

African American Newspapers is being created from the most extensive
African American newspaper archives in the United States-those of the
Wisconsin Historical Society, Kansas State Historical Society and the
Library of Congress. Selections were guided by James Danky, editor of
"African-American Newspapers and Periodicals: A National Bibliography"
(Harvard University Press, 1998). Before James Danky's book, most
newspaper bibliographers overlooked the titles in this collection. Many
of these newspapers are therefore largely unknown and will present
students and scholars with unmapped territory to explore.

Beginning with Freedom's Journal (NY) -- the first African American
newspaper published in the United States -- the titles in this unique
resource include The Colored Citizen (KS), Arkansas State Press, Rights
of All (NY), Wisconsin Afro-American, New York Age, L'Union (LA),
Northern Star and Freeman's Advocate (NY), Richmond Planet, Cleveland
Gazette, The Appeal (MN) and hundreds of others from every region of the
U.S.
