Thank you all for all your suggestions relating to a
tribute to Dr. Barrow.
Here's what I propose relative to immediate
action:
1. Given the response from the membership on making a
contribution to the Barrow scholarship fund, let's take $500 from the MAC
treasury and make an immediate contribution in Dr. Barrow's name
during this time of their loss.
2. We can then vote at the annual meeting on the
amount of our annual contribution. (This will be in addition to the
$500)
3. I can approach AEJ on a tribute page for the
conference bulletin and help work out the details. ( Anyone willing to work on
that, let me know) As Camilla suggested, we can publish names of donors as
part of a two-page spread.
4. We can make plans to have a fundraiser for the
scholarship in August. Any volunteers?
5. I'll send a card and flowers on behalf of
MAC to the Barrow family.
6. Jennifer has agreed to investigate if the Council of Divisions --
to see if they can place a special panel on the schedule to honor and remember
who Lee was and what he meant to the diversity efforts of all of
AEJMC.
Did I miss anything?

I concur. In addition to a web tribute, perhaps AEJMC and MAC
could publish tributes in the convention program. For the MAC tribute, it
would be nice to have a two-page format. The tribute and a picture on the
front page, and a list of scholarship donors on the back page. Donor
recognition may inspire gifts and matching gifts amongst the likes of
AEJMC, AEJMC divisions, individuals, as well as JMC programs and
organizations. We could even get really creative and list scholarship
donors by categories such as dream partners ($0-$99), vision partners
($100-$499), and legacy partners $500 - $1000 or more...perhaps the PR people
can be more creative. Moving forward, we could encourage repeat
contributions as well as new donors. This initiative would honor the
legacy of Dr. Lee and address the decreasing scholarship value pointed up by
Federico. What are your thoughts?

Lionel Barrow, Jr.
Dear Jennifer:
I join our colleagues in AEJMC in
urging our Association to take a public position on the life and death of Dr.
Lee Barrow.
I am away at a site visit so I cannot do as much as I
should, but here is a beginning statement that I would like to see posted in
conjunction with other tributes to Dr. Barrow:
The faculty, students
and staff members in the John H. Johnson School of Communications share the
grief of the family of the former dean of our school, Dr. Lionel Barrow, on
his death. Dean Barrow led the school for 10 years, bringing stability to the
young school, introducing a strong graduate and research focus and
establishing an enduring linkage between the school and the radio and
television stations owned by the University. In his work in national
communication associations, he was a pioneer in developing initiatives
that focused on diversity concerns. We will miss his candor and
courage.
