Thanks Natalie for sharing these links.  The e-mails that raised questions about why single out CU-Boulder make valid points.  I would suggest that the bigger concern and what should be addressed is the viability of journalism education and journalism schools in this very tenuous media and economic environment.  Our new president in the last newsletter made a marvelous suggestion and I think it is being actualized--an ideas summit.  These ideas summits will take place over the next year to address what we can do to sustain our journalism programs.  Perhaps that is what the letter should suggest-- more participation by all of us in these ideas summit for very good reasons.  As some have pointed out, it was TAMU, now it's CU-Boulder--what school is next?  My thoughts that I hope make sense as I was in the middle of something else when I saw these spate of e-mails--so thought I'd lend my two-cents worth.

Colleagues,
Earlier this semester, the chancellor at the University of Colorado asked a committee to decide on the future of the journalism school.
On November 17, the committee decided that the school should be discontinued and that the program should be "strategically realigned."

Here is an article on this: http://cuindependent.com/2010/11/17/discontinuance-committee-recommends-cu-journalism-school-be-strategically-realigned/

A copy of the report is available here: http://academicaffairs.colorado.edu/academicreview/

Colleagues,

The statement is a wonderful discourse on the value of a journalism/mass communications degree program and its place  in a research university. However, I have no idea what precipitates the letter. Is the CU program being threatened with closure? An ill-advised reorganization? Decision to drop accreditation? What?

Dear Commission and MAC Members:

AEJMC is considering issuing a statement regarding the Journalism Program at

the University of Colorado.  Drafters of the statement are asking for a

quick response before the end the week.

Some of the other divisions started posting and exchanging ideas earlier

today. I wanted to give you the same opportunity to provide feedback prior

to a final decision being made regarding the attached statement.

Tomorrow, I will leave for Albuquerque to attend the AEJMC Winter Board

meeting.  But please send in your feedback so that I can share the

sentiments of the groups.

Thank you,

Linda
