Amigo/as de OURMedia: qué buena forma de terminar el año: descansa sobre mi mesa la Enciclopedia de Medios de Movimientos Sociales, una obra extraordinaria, 600 páginas y 250 artículos sobre medios comunitarios/alternativos/ciudadanos/radicales. El editor es John D.H. Downing, fundador de OURMedia. La Enciclopedia asume una definición muy amplia del término “medios” e incluye artículos sobre graffiti, canción popular, danza, teatro callejero, hasta impresos, cine, Internet, televisión y radio. Setenta países están representados en iniciativas mediáticas del siglo XX y del presente siglo. Aproximadamente la mitad de los artículos fueron escritos por mujeres. La Enciclopedia también incluye ensayos más largos sobre ciertos temas, como medios y “medio ambiente”, “derechos humanos”, “performance”; “medios feministas/jóvenes/indígenas”, así como ensayos sobre ciertas definiciones (medios “alternativos,” “comunitarios”, “del Tercer Sector”, “ciudadanos”, “participativos”). Dear Friends of OURMedia: What a great way to end the year! Just published by Sage, the Encyclopedia of Social Movement Media sits as a centerpiece on my dining room table. The editor is our own John D.H. Downing, one of the founders of OURMedia.  This is an extraordinary book, 600 pages and 250 entries on all forms of social movement media, from graffiti, popular song, dance and street theatre to print, film, broadcasting and the Internet. Some seventy countries are represented from almost all around the world, spread over the 20th and current centuries. Approximately half the entries are by women. There are also longer think-pieces on issues – e.g. environmentalist, human rights, performance art, feminist, youth, and Indigenous peoples’ media – as well as on terminology (‘alternative’, ‘community’, ‘Third Sector’, ‘citizens’, ‘participatory’). Obviously, many of the Encyclopedia authors are OURMedia members. Our network is well represented. CONGRATULATIONS, JD!!! The Encyclopedia is an exceptional book!
