The University has received notice of a second pending class action lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard Company.  The facts of the claims allege that (1) certain HP printers will stop printing, warning that the ink cartridge has run out of ink, even though there is still ink in the cartridges; (2) the printer is using color ink in addition to black ink when bring black and white documents without notifying the user; and (3) HP designed some printer cartridges to stop working on undisclosed expiration dates preventing further printing despite the amount of ink in the cartridge.  In order to act upon this claim, information from you will be necessary to determine if, and how many, of the affected printers have been purchased or leased by the University.  The list of printers is attached for your review.

There are three categories of printers affected by the lawsuit: Ciolino, Rich, and Blennis models.  If you have one of these printer models, please submit the following information: date of purchase, serial number, and the department or individual who uses or used the printer.  In order to meet the notice deadlines required by the class action, a complete list of all affected printers must be submitted via email to [log in to unmask]">[log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>  by Wednesday, December 8, 2010. The Purchasing Department and NC IT Department will compile information for all campuses.  PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL.  Questions may be forwarded to [log in to unmask]">[log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> .
