The Lawnside (N.J.) Historical Society showed “Deeds
Not Words” by James Rada last night. Lawnside is an African-American
municipality in New Jersey rooted in the abolitionist movement and the
Underground Railroad. The documentary was moving, to say the least. One member
of the audience was a 90-year-old U.S. Navy veteran. He is still boiling and
bitter about the paradoxes of his time in the WWII.
This film should be shown and discussed with not only military
folks, academicians, historians and college students but middle and high school
students as well.
James and the Howard students who worked on this project have
done a great service. It needs full funding for mass production!
