Dear OurMedia/NuestrosMedios Colleagues,

You might be interested in my article, "Peace-Building Through Listening, Digital Storytelling and Community Media in Cyprus," published in the Spring 2011 issue of the Global Media Journal: Mediterranean Edition.  An open access journal, GMJ: ME is located at

-- select "current issue" on the left side.

The article, intended for practitioners and scholars, describes the use of self-reflexivity for peace-building purposes in Cyprus in the fall of 2010, channeled through digital storytelling and community-based media.  With support from the Cyprus Fulbright Commission and the Cyprus Community Media Centre (CCMC), classes and workshops in digital storytelling were held across the island.  My project, “Digital Storytelling as a Method of Self-Reflexivity, Oral History, and Community-Building” included participants from Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities on the divided island, as well as non-Cypriot story makers.  Based on the critical pedagogy framework of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire with implementation through communication scholar Brenda Dervin’s Sense-Making Methodology, the project included concepts and practices from digital storytelling and community-based media.

The stories created during the workshops are available on the "Cyprus Stories" channel on YouTube: www.youtube.com/CyprusStories

Playlists on the right side of the channel screen include: #1: All stories from 2010 workshops; #2-5: the 2010 stories organized by institution; #6: stories from 2008; #8: stories from 2011 Gorilla Activism Youth Camp workshop

The project has continued in 2011 with support from the Cyprus Fulbright Commission and the Bicommunal Support Program of the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia.

cheers,
John
