Scheduled Sessions 9:45 Registration/Refreshments Session One: 10:15-11:45 Room 1 “Using Children's Literature and Authors To Establish Writing in the K-2 Classroom” Target Audience Pre-K through 2 Heather Pogue, Norman Public Schools, OWP Teacher Consultant Are you trying to find ways for children to apply the writing process? This workshop will help integrate the use of picture books and authors to develop and engage children in authentic narrative writing. The workshop will offer ways to incorporate writing at the beginning of the year as writing routines are established. Room 2 “On a Quest for Success!” Target Audience 3rd-5th Grade Stacey Howard, Tecumseh Public Schools, OWP Teacher Consultant Teachers will learn a variety of strategies to use across the curriculum with the Six Traits to further develop student writing. We will explore narrative, informational, and opinion writing through mini lessons that are aligned with the Common Core Standards. Participants will be actively involved in activities they will be able to use in their own classroom, and have the opportunity to collaborate with one another to further develop ideas and offer extensions. Lessons are guided by the new Oklahoma State Writing Test Rubric. Room 3 “Getting to the Core: Simple Strategies to use Common Core across the Curriculum in Classrooms.” Target Audience 6th-12th Melanie Vincent, All Saint Catholic School, OWP Teacher Consultant Do you struggle incorporating Common Core into content area subjects? Do you have students that are unmotivated writers? This hands-on workshop will cover many strategies for incorporating writing into content area teaching that are engaging for the students and address Common Core standards. Session Two: 1:15-2:45 Room 1 “Writing is as Easy as ABC” Target Audience Pre-K through 2nd Jamie Johnson, NBCT, Norman Public Schools, OWP Teacher Consultant This demonstration will include a vareity of reading and writing strategies that can be used across the curriculum. The strategies shared can be employed in pre-k through college level classes. Open-ended lessons that incorporate writing across the curriculum will be presented. Room 2 “Navigating the Waters of Writing Target Audience 3rd-5th Grade Stacey Howard, Tecumseh Public Schools, OWP Teacher Consultant Keep your students sailing through the writing waters by learning skills that prepare and set the course for success on the upcoming writing test! In this session, you will be introduced to the Oklahoma C3 Writing Rubric and learn to break a part the prompt. You will view student samples and gain insight into the Common Core voyage. The State Department has posted prompts to the upcoming writing assessment, however there are no scored student samples posted at this time. OWP TC’s have had their own students write to these SDE provided prompts. This session is a must for 5th grade teachers! Room 3 “4 Heads are Better than 1: Student Writing Groups in Action” Target Audience 6th-12th Jason Stephenson, Deer Creek High School, OWP Teacher Consultant Learn how to effectively use student writing groups in your classroom to grow students as critical and thoughtful writers and to provide more opportunities for feedback. Break 2:45-2:55 Session Three: 2:55-4:15 Room 1 “Making the connection between Math and Writing” Target Audience K-5th Lori Newmark, NBCT, Moore Public Schools, OWP Teacher Consultant Having trouble integrating writing with math? Learn how to use a daily math journal to begin integrating writing into your math curriculum. Participate in various math and writing lessons to encourage your students to become betters writers in math to encourage confidence and success with Common Core State Standards. Room 2 “In Our Write Minds . . .”Target Audience 3rd-8th Johnnie Keel, NBCT, Norman Public Schools, OWP Teacher Consultant This presentation will share creative ways to get students writing effectively in different modes and to different audiences. Participants will learn strategies and techniques for adding depth to their writing, for evaluating evidence to support their writing, and using text features to write well. Room 3 “Common Core Across the Curriculum” Target Audience 6th-12th Laurie Ward, Newcastle Public Schools, OWP Teacher Consultant This presentation will focus on taking participants through some of the Myths and Facts of Common Core as well as providing lessons, rubrics, and ideas from various subject areas, about how to integrate Common Core into the classroom.
