What a lovely man, with such incredible dedication to the Siglo de Oro. Ironically (having no idea of his illness), I was just about to write him a note, praising his edition of Don Quijote, which has turned out to be a perfect choice for the grad seminar that UNR has brought me out of retirement to teach this semester. Rest in peace, Tom.

Lamento muchísimo la muerte de Tom Lathrop. Afinidades cervantistas aparte, recuerdo con especial cariño nuestras charlas sobre rock and roll en Almagro, durante el I Congreso Internacional de la Asociación de Cervantistas. Perdemos un colega brillante y amigable. Descanse en paz.

Tom Lathrop was a California original.  His presence among us will be greatly missed.  We were friends for many years, he visited us in Pasadena on occasion, and I was pleased to serve of his editorial board for 20 years. We had lively and, I think, productive discussions.  He always made me think and sometimes reconsider. He published my first book. QEPD.

Our condolences to the family,

Jim and Patricia Parr

Dear Robert,
The news is very sad, and the only thing I can say is that the much-treasured Tom Lathrop will be missed. I benefitted personally and professionally from his enthusiasm, practical help and generous spirit. He was a caballero with a noble heart.

My condolences to his family,
Sue

Dear Robert and Bruce,

I received a very sad phone call this morning from Tom Lathrop's daughter letting me know that he passed away. He was visiting in California and we were scheduled to meet up at the end of the week. Tom was a very dear friend and an excellent colleague during my decade at the University of Delaware (and beyond!). He was a true Renaissance man, and a tremendously chivalrous knight. I already miss him immensely. His website makes me smile:  http://www.udel.edu/fllt/faculty/lathrop/

The Cervantes Society of America will certainly mourn this loss.

With heavy heart,
Vincent Martin
