JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE

Youth Radio seeks a meticulous and intrepid researcher to study the
activities of a dynamic team of young people creating media stories and
mobile apps at Youth Radio, Oakland?s Peabody Award-winning production
company. The researcher will get to collaborate with our MIT Media Lab
partners, who are building tools that put the power of mobile computing and
digital media into young people?s hands. Mozilla is in the mix too, helping
us to inspire and recognize youth learning through hands-on production.

The role? Scholar-in-Residence. It?s a bold idea. We?re embedding a
researcher inside our community-based, youth-driven organization to generate
knowledge, findings, and curriculum models out of this space. Your research
will inform the academic literature and advance the field of digital media
and informal STEM learning. All of it is funded by the National Science
Foundation and other generous supporters.

You?ll be working inside Youth Radio?s Innovation Lab, launched in 2013. In
collaboration with professional mentors, young people in the Lab combine
their top-flight journalism and app development skills to create dynamic new
storytelling tools and platforms. The Lab is driven by the strong conviction
that young people are creators of knowledge, not just receivers; that they
are story-makers, not just subjects; that they are technology developers,
not just users; and that they are researchers, not just researched.

Research mentorship will come from MIT investigators, our professional
evaluators from Rockman et. al., and Youth Radio?s own Research Director,
Elisabeth Soep (PhD Stanford and member of the MacArthur Foundation?s Youth
and Participatory Politics Research Network).
