It is high time that authors writing about Jews (or Christians for that matter) realize that those characters they purport to analyze are not Jews at all, but characters conceived by Christian writers representing their conception of what Jews are. This has been realized by Shakespearean scholars writing about Shylock, who is no more a Jew than Hamlet is! Characters are ideological projections, ideological that is as products of a playwright's creative imagination, and never creatures of flesh and blood.
