New CBQ Editor Calls for Reviews of Recent Books in Mass Communication

Communication Booknotes Quarterly (CBQ) is an annotated quarterly review service for recent books, reports, and electronic publications on all aspects of mass communication designed for an audience of scholars and librarians in the United States and around the world. Subject areas of interest include, but are not limited to: advertising, public relations, journalism, telecommunications, media effects, media economics, media regulation and policy, media ethics, critical and cultural studies, popular culture, books and publishing, and film studies.

CBQ new editor, Dr. Weiwu Zhang of Texas Tech University, is now calling for a chance to publish timely reviews of recent books in mass communication.

I plan to continue the vision established by CBQ's founding editor, Dr. Chris Sterling. Under his 45 years of editorship, Dr. Sterling developed and maintained the high quality of the current bibliography service for the field of mass communication. As his successor, I will continue his combination of both review essays on a specific subject and brief annotated bibliographic reviews of newly released books and reports on a variety of other topics in each issue.

I also plan to initiate new approaches to maintain CBQ's vitality and value. First, State-of-the-Discipline reviews will critically evaluate the current status, important issues and future directions in the field of mass communication. Second, to draw new readers, CBQ will expand its scope by carrying reviews in the interface between mass communication and related disciplines in political science, marketing, sociology, and psychology. Third, CBQ will run reviews of electronic publications to better reflect this current trend in media research. Finally, CBQ will initiate reviews of books that are published in foreign languages.

CBQ seeks reviews of publications that reflect the diversity of theoretical perspectives, methodologies, and specialties from across the discipline of mass communication. Diversity of submissions will be aided by an eclectic editorial board of active review contributors who bring unique perspectives and expertise within specific subjects.

Contributors are encouraged to develop any of the three kinds of reviews CBQ publishes:
(1) topical review essays comparing and integrating multiple publications about a given subject; (2) extensive State-of-the-Discipline reviews that assess the state of knowledge in various aspects of mass communication; and (3) brief annotated reviews across a variety of subjects.

Reviews are usually solicited from experts in the subject. Open submissions are also welcome. All book reviews should be submitted to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
