MAC Colleagues,
I had to take a break from grading student papers to 1) congratulate my sister Karen Turner for her election victory, and 2) to respond to her sentiments about AEJMC's nominations process.
Thanks for your thoughtful comments on this important issue.
Without going into detail regarding my interactions with members of that committee, the committee is a standing that is "appointed by the AEJMC president." Members serve a three-year term and can be identified on the AEJMC website Under the tabs: "About", "Leadership", and "Appointed Committees":

I know that my dear friend and colleague Carolyn Stroman serves with distinction and represents MAC interests. To that we should all appreciate Carolyn and other leaders like Paula Poindexter.

I will not be attending this year's convention-the first one I've missed in more than 15 years-but mainly because of a major move from Tennessee to Long Island, NY to start a new chapter in my academic career. But I know the division and all of its members will do great things in San Francisco! See you in Minneapolis in 2016 (Lord willing) if not before.

Thanks everyone for your support and congratulations. I'm pleased to be elected to the Teaching Committee. Thinking strategically about getting members elected is an important conversation. I'm taking a group of students this summer to South Africa so I don't plan to be at the conference. That said, I'd like to suggest that the conversation include an understanding of the nomination process. A few years back I first expressed an interest in the Teaching Committee. When I wasn't selected by the Nominating Committee to be on the ballot I looked into the process - I naively thought all one had to do was self-nominate and/or get others to nominate them. I don't know if MAC has a member on the appointed Nominating Committee. While writing this email I unsuccessfully tried to access the membership of that committee. That's certainly an important committee on which to have a voice since the election ballot is determined by that committee.

Excellent Frances and Meta! I would further suggest: 1: Those who have run once or twice but were not elected, PLEASE run the next year and the next. Few are elected the first time they run but many of us feel, "They don't want me," and stop before we succeed. 2. More of us need to do what Dwight did on this listserv -- announce their candidacy and others'. You should do it three times - once before ballots are released, once as soon and they are released and then again a few days before the election close. Not all of us read every message or are able to weed through all of our in box. That will allow more MAC people who want to support division candidates to do so.

Dear all:

I agree with Meta. Thanks for your votes! Jennifer notified me similarly. I was 23 votes shy of the third seat on the Research Committee.

I want to commend MAC member Dwight Brooks for a well-run campaign for the AEJMC vice presidency. I spoke with him and he appreciates everyone's support, including recent phone calls and emails.

Congrats to those who were elected, including Karen Turner and George Sylvie, elected to the Teaching Committee and Research Committee, respectively.

The good point about this year's election is that we had lots of diversity on the ballot - more than I can remember from the past. I agree with Meta that we must continue to "toss our hats in the ring." For the MAC business meeting in San Francisco, I am putting on the agenda, a discussion about election processes, strategies and representation. Let me know if you have additional agenda items.

On a related note, one of the format changes we plan to try for this year's MAC research paper awards is to present the awards during the paper session rather than at the business meeting. Paper winners will receive the awards at the end of the paper session in which they present. The reason for this change is to allow more time for discussion at the division meeting as members have mentioned they would like to delve into more topics, but we seem to run out of time each year.

Let me know if you have concerns or thoughts about this proposed change.

Sincerely,

Frances

Friends,
Jennifer notified me before the election results were released that I was about 20 votes shy of capturing the seat on the Accrediting Council for which I was nominated.  I just want to thank you for the support and, as I was encouraged to run this time, I want to encourage those of you who might be interested in AEJ service to toss your hats in the ring too.  You never know (-;

Have a great send of the semester and rewarding summer.
