“Building a Diverse Academy”
2016 AEJMC Conference - Minneapolis, August 4-7, 2016

The Strategic Plan Implementation Committee of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication is now accepting panel proposals for the 2016 AEJMC Conference for our Building a Diverse Academy initiative.

To encourage divisions and interest groups to think about diversity long-term, this new project will provide funds for up to two panels at the 2016 AEJMC Conference that feature a partnership with a domestic diversity-based association/organization and two AEJMC divisions or interest groups. These panels will not cost any group a “chip” and will not take the place of any group’s regular programs.

Successful panel proposals will focus on an organization or group that the divisions/interest groups have NOT made connections with in the past, and panels that demonstrate the ability and willingness to develop a long-term connection with that organization that would last past the 2016 conference. Proposed organization must be headquartered in the United States. Organizations may be academic, educational, professional or non-profit in nature. Topics of the panel should be innovative and pertain to building diversity within the academy. Preference will be given to proposals that demonstrate original thinking and a strong potential to make an impact on the fields of journalism, mass communication and/or the media.

AEJMC will provide coach airfare, two nights at the conference hotel, and complimentary conference registration for one officer of the organization.  Current AEJMC members and officers are not eligible for this support. At the conference AEJMC will sponsor a breakfast for the panelists, the head and vice head of the partnering groups, and the AEJMC Board of Directors.

A division or interest group may only be a partner in one proposal. All proposals should have two sponsors. The heads of the two groups proposing the panel must approve the proposal before it is submitted to AEJMC.

All panel proposals will be due to via email to [log in to unmask] by 5 p.m. (Eastern time) Monday, December 14, 2015. Questions about the proposal and the selection process may be directed to McGill via email.

Please use “Diverse Academy Panel Proposals” as the subject of your email. The proposal should be attached to the email in a Word document and should include the following information:

(1) Panel Title

(2) Panel Sponsorship: List the two divisions or interest groups that will be sponsoring the panel. (Only 2 groups allowed.)

(4) Possible Panelists: Indicate individual from the organization who would participate on the panel.
