Dear Dr. Kay Porter,

I am the Associate Director for Diversity and Recruitment for Graduate Programs in Bioscience<http://ucla.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=bad8716555473ed6bda9ab9bf&id=b0195c1d6d&e=5adb25158e> (GPB) at UCLA and I am writing to invite your students to an exciting opportunity to do innovative Life Sciences and Biomedical research at UCLA this summer!

I serve as a Director for the Summer Program for Undergraduate Research in the Life and Biomedical Sciences<http://ucla.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=bad8716555473ed6bda9ab9bf&id=ce729e4e41&e=5adb25158e> (SPUR-LABS). The UCLA SPUR-LABS summer program provides a rigorous research training experience for undergraduates with interests in a broad range of bioscience disciplines. Exceptional research training, integrated with professional development activities, will prepare students to succeed in leading Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. programs. The program aims to contribute to diversity, inclusion, and the elimination of barriers to participation in bioscience research careers and is designed for students participating in honors research programs that foster transition to doctoral programs (such as Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation- LSAMP).

As a former LSAMP beneficiary and LSAMP Program Director, I have witnessed the incredible talent that LSAMP undergraduates can harness when they have access to resources, effective mentoring and a sense of community. My colleagues and I are committed to ensuring that our summer programs offer these support systems so that all participants thrive during their summer at UCLA and leave feeling prepared to apply to graduate programs.

Some of the highlights of SPUR-LABS include:

  * Hands on research experience mentored by an outstanding UCLA faculty member
  * Training in a world class research environment that includes medical school and college bioscience programs close together on one campus
  * Academic and professional development advising as well as career awareness panels
  * Weekly seminars and workshops on career skills including science writing and presentation
  * Individualized guidance on applying to graduate school including a GRE prep. course
  * Networking with bioscience students and faculty
  * Financial assistance provided as a $3,500 stipend, travel allowance, on-campus housing and meal allowance

There are many opportunities available for your students here at UCLA and I it would be my pleasure to tell them more about them. Please forward this email to your students; they will find that many of past participants were in programs like LSAMP.

I hope your students will enjoy exploring our website and will contact us by email at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> or by phone 310-206-1845<tel:310-206-1845> if they have any questions about the application process.

We look forward to their application and learning more about their scientific interests.

Applications for SPUR-LABS are due by February 1, 2016.
