Subject: Opportunity for Students Interested in Plant Biology
Dear Colleague,
I am writing to you all asking for your assistance. The Maize Genetics Community would like to continue to increase minority participation in our discipline, and we are offering travel grants to our annual professional conference. Our goal with these travel awards is to recruit future graduate students and post-docs as well as to engage early career faculty with the eventual goal of developing collaborative research projects. A similar effort in the past two years has resulted in several new, productive collaborations. For example, Camelia Okpodu was a new faculty contact for the maize community. As a result of her participation in the award program and attending last year's maize meeting, she developed and submitted a new grant proposal from Norfolk State University on undergraduate research. We sincerely desire to continue and strengthen such relationships.

This next conference will be held March 9-12, 2017 at the Union Station Hotel, in St Louis, Missouri. Each award provides funding for travel, lodging, and conference registration. First-time conference attendees are encouraged to apply. The conference covers the latest advances in Plant Biology, Genomics, and Genetics. Awardees will be mentored during the conference to aid science career networking. Awardees will also be personally introduced to the invited Plenary Speakers and funding agency representatives.

Undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, and early-career faculty are all eligible to apply. Applicants must be members of underrepresented groups in science and be a US citizen or permanent resident. Faculty mentors of student awardees are also eligible to apply even if these mentors are not from underrepresented groups.
We ask for your help in raising awareness for this funding opportunity with your students (e.g., LSAMP, McNair, and Bridge Fellows) who have an interest in Plant Biology and Genetics/Genomics (it doesn't matter if they are not working on maize). Could you please distribute the travel grant description to potential applicants from your programs? This could be through an e-mail list or posting on appropriate LSAMP websites or bulletin boards. A short description of this opportunity is listed below. I have also attached a pdf flier that we would be grateful if you could post or distribute. Thank you very much for your time and help.

Sincerely,
Erich Grotewold
