OK-LSAMP weekly opportunities email

Greetings scholars! We are trying out a new way to share all the opportunities with you. Instead of receiving many separate emails, we will be sending out one weekly “newsletter where you may click the individual links to read the emails that are relevant to you in a new window, just make sure you are on a regular computer and click the “view in browser” option and not your smartphone! We will be working on it as a way to be more efficient. Hope everyone is off to a good start and enjoy the rest of your week.

Dear colleagues,
I am contacting you to let you know about an opportunity for all LSAMP Scholars. The Dean of Stony Brook University's Graduate School has graciously allowed us to offer application fee waivers for all LSAMP Scholars who are applying to a Stony Brook graduate program for Fall 2017 admission. In addition to this opportunity, we are also recruiting for the LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship, which offers a $32,000 annual stipend for two years, a full tuition scholarship, fee coverage, and health insurance. Bridge to the Doctorate Fellows are also given specialized academic support in the way of tutoring and writing and exam workshops. This is an exciting time for graduate education at Stony Brook. We currently offer graduate programs in forty-eight fields across the Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Business, Journalism, Health and Medicine, as well as the Graduate Arts Campus in Southampton. As a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and with our partnerships with Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, we offer a unique opportunity to become involved in cutting edge research and scholarship.

I would also like to tell you a bit about the Center for Inclusive Education (CIE) here at Stony Brook University. The CIE is a division of The Graduate School, with the purpose of providing services and support to underrepresented or otherwise disadvantaged students pursuing graduate degrees on our campus. The CIE houses seven externally funded programs, which share the same goal of promoting and integrating the talents of underrepresented domestic students at the highest degree levels of scholarship through targeted and strategic outreach, advisement, support, and advocacy. Deadline: Jan 31st

Overview

La Selva and Las Cruces Research Stations provide undergraduate students with unparalleled access to tropical forest ecosystems, mentoring by experienced tropical ecology researchers, training in field research methodology, and experiences with local culture. Each student will work with an onstation mentor as well as an on-campus mentor from his/her home institution to ensure the integration of the summer research experience into students’ academic careers.
Please carefully read the program descriptions below as well as the "Prerequisites" tab to the left.  Find the appropriate list of mentors (under "Downloads" on the right side of this page) to see available mentor names and project topics.

NSF REU (open to students from any non-R1 accredited U.S. institution): this program will take place at La Selva Biological Station. Features of this program include 1) research skills in the field, 2) enhancing communication skills through training in scientific writing, oral presentations, science blogging, and videography, and 3) integration of cultural experiences with research development. Field trips will focus on environmental topics such as biodiversity conservation and agroecology and will offer opportunities to interact with local farmers, smaller field stations, and/or environmental NGOs.

NSF LSAMP REU (open to students from LSAMP member institutions; funding pending): students can choose between either Las Cruces or La Selva Biological Stations for their nine-week research experience. Each station will follow similar pedagogy, program structure, and schedules, though each will emphasize elements unique to its location. Features of this program include 1) research skills in the field, 2) enhancing communication skills through training in scientific writing, oral presentations, science blogging, and videography, and 3) integration of cultural experiences with research development. Students will interact with indigenous and rural communities in Costa Rica to discuss the important environmental and social issues affecting their lives and communities. The Las Cruces Node will focus on interactions with local  indigenous (Brunca and Ngöbe) communities and special field trips on ethnobiology. The La Selva Node will focus on environmental topics such as biodiversity conservation and agroecology and will offer opportunities to interact with local farmers, smaller field stations, and/or environmental NGOs.

Dear LSAMP Community,

In addition to engineering and physical sciences, there are many other summer research programs at UW-Madison.  These are unique opportunities for undergraduates to work closely with faculty mentors and graduate students in their major discipline. Students accepted into research programs are matched with faculty whose expertise and interests match the student's research interest. Students gain valuable skills for success in post-graduate studies and careers in their chosen field. Upon completing their summer research, students have the opportunity to present and receive reviews of their individual work. The SROP goal is to create a diverse academic environment by increasing the number of traditionally underrepresented students in UW–Madison graduate programs and ultimately the professoriate. Please follow this link to see all SROP programs for summer 2017 at UW-Madison and encourage your students to apply!

Thank you!
