The Department of Communication Arts in the College of Arts and Humanities invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor of Multimedia Journalism. This position is located on the Statesboro campus.

In January 2017, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents voted to consolidate Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University. The new, 27,000-student university will be named Georgia Southern University with campuses in Savannah, Statesboro, and Hinesville. Within this setting, the Department of Communication Arts is the largest in the College of Arts and Humanities, and is home to five majors: Communication Studies, Multimedia Journalism, Multimedia Film and Production, Public Relations, and Theatre. It is a vibrant, innovative department that stresses faculty collaboration and cross-disciplinary instruction. The department occupies a recently renovated building with studio, editing/lab, classroom and office spaces. Rigorous classroom instruction is complemented by experiential activities that encourage students to both learn about and apply class concepts. The successful candidate would be expected to contribute to program development and assessment, especially in the area of the University’s Quality Enhancement Program’s focus on writing.

Position Description. Reporting to the Department Chair, the assistant professor of multimedia journalism requires teaching MMJ courses as well as courses in the area of converged news production curriculum, as well as research, and service responsibilities. The position is an academic (9/10 month), tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

• Earned terminal degree in journalism, mass communication or a closely related field with at least 18 graduate semester hours in journalism-based coursework, by August 1, 2018

• Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution

• Ability to teach in the areas of required news/media courses, including teaching basic news creation across multiple platforms such as print, online, video and audio

• Ability to support additional journalism course offerings such as sports reporting, STEM journalism, magazine writing and editing, opinion journalism, and/or copy editing
