Nightmare on Research Street: The Power of Data Loss Compels You

Check out past years: 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 and look for the hashtag #NightmareResearch on social media.

What: Write a text post, record a video, or post an image with caption featuring your terrifying story of lost research, missing papers, and near misses!
Who: Researchers at all career stages (undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs, staff, faculty)
Submission deadline: Thursday, October 28, 12 p.m.
Prize winners announced: Monday, October 31, 3 p.m. (with pizza provided!)
Why: Win one of three 2-TB hard drives or one of three OU Bookstore Gift Cards!  Don't let your project become a zombie.  Hear harrowing tales of why you need to keep your research, files, and digital assets safe!  Learn preventative measures to keep data vampires out of your project!
Where: #NightmareResearch on Twitter, Instagram, or email your video to [log in to unmask] to be posted on @OU_Libraries' social media accounts.  Hybrid in-person/Zoom winner announcements on Monday, Oct. 31, at 3pm in LL118.  Audience members are welcome to share stories at the prize announcement event but will not be eligible for prize draws.


Additional details

• Entries must be shorter than 1 min if video (.mp4 or .mov format with closed captioning for accessibility) or a .png or .jpg image with caption explanation.
• Halloween costumes and spooky Zoom backgrounds encouraged, but not required.
• People's choice Twitter prize for entries using #NightmareResearch: most likes + shares receives 2-TB Hard Drive
• People's choice Instagram for entries using #NightmareResearch: 2-TB Hard Drive
• Random prize draws: 1 2-TB Hard Drive, 3 OU Bookstore Vouchers.

Terms & Conditions

1. OU Libraries and OU Graduate Student Life reserve the right to refuse display of submitted content.
2. Photographic and video reproduction permission for publicity, classroom instruction and workshop use, and website use is assumed on all entries.
3. OU Libraries and OU Graduate Student Life employees and employee family members may participate but are not eligible for prizes.

This workshop will be offered as a hybrid in-person/Zoom format. This event is offered once per year near Halloween.  Automatic captioning will be provided via Zoom. We have zero scheduled breaks approximately during the workshop.  Gendered and family restrooms are available on the same floor. Food and drinks are provided.  Additionally, Bizzell Memorial Library has a coffee shop on LL1 (hours may vary) and vending machines on LL1, in the hall east of the community room.  Water fountains are available on all floors.
