Agenda: 

8:30-9:00 Registration

9:00-10:30 Session 1

10:30-10:45 Break

10:45-Noon Session 2

Sessions will be targeted by grade bands. Participants will have time to ask questions and discuss strategies. Each session will include handouts and strategies  that will make an immediate impact with students. 

Each participant will also receive a printed and bound copy of English Language Arts Oklahoma Academic Standards. 


Elementary Track:


Presenter: Joni Hamilton, Whitebead Public Schools

 

Session 1:   Teaching the new ELA standards with Children’s Literature

Participants will expand their knowledge as we examine the new ELA standards and how they apply to classroom instruction.   Learn how to implement meaningful reading and writing activities while instilling a love for children’s literature in your students.

 

Session 2:  Using Children’s Literature to teach Reading, Vocabulary, and Writing

Participants will engage in hands on activities using novels and picture books. Whether it’s writing a descriptive sentence or a persuasive essay, participants will be equipped with a variety of strategies that can be applied across the different genres of children’s literature. 

 

 

Secondary Track:

Presenter: Cara Gaddy, Pauls Valley High Schools

Session 1:  Three Steps to Better Writing

 In this session, we will examine three steps to produce better writing. This are easy, applicable procedures that can greatly improve any student’s writing. (Anatomy of a good paragraph with analysis verbs, sentence variety, active voice)

 

Session 2:  Tackling a Tough Text

 Have you witnessed any of the following student behaviors when trying to teach a tough text?: sleeping, glazed eyes, whining, or crying? Then this is the session for you. In this session,  participants will be investigating literature such as Shakespeare/Pride and Prejudice along with activities to get students moving and involved with the text.

Registration: $75 (after October 19, 2022)
