A Celebration and Exploration of Nikki Giovanni and her Poetry

Led by Shelly K. Unsicker-Durham, Poet, Adjunct, and OWP Teacher Consultant

The Oklahoma Writing Project’s Poetry Series for Spring 2025 will glean inspiration for both writing and teaching from the work of award-winning poet Nikki Giovanni (June 7, 1943 – December 9, 2024). On three Saturday mornings via Zoom from 10-11:30, we will dive into her poems, her passions, and her process with a focus on what we can bring to our classrooms and our own writing. Each session will include time for writing and for sharing.

February 1, 2025Memoir and Identity. In this workshop participants will explore Nikki Giovanni’s use of memory and identity in three of her poems, using her work as mentor poems and springboards into writing.

March 8, 2025:  Weaving Language into a Something. In this session we will explore Nikki Giovanni’s poems and her  take on “Craft” as we search for our poems, waiting to be found, through Imitation and Found Poetry.

April 5, 2025Talk Back Poetry. Much of Giovanni’s poetry pushes back against the norms and expectations of a dominant culture. Using her work and other mentor poems for inspiration, participants will write their own Talk Back Poems. Please register below.   You can register for just one or all 3!
