Hello, OU Habitat for Humanity will be having two general volunteer meetings this week, the first one Tuesday, Jan 19th at 6:30 PM and the second one Thursday, Jan 21st at 6:30 PM (both meeting will be largely the same, so you don't need to attend both). The meetings will be in Dale Hall, however we don't yet know which room (prayers to the gods of scheduling are appreciated). We will post some signs. Let me tell you a few of the things we will be talking about: 1999 Walk for Habitat This is a walk to raise funds for the first OU student house. We are only half-way to our goal of $25,000, so we REALLY need everybody's help! Every student who gets over $50 in pledges will get a free t-shirt, and there will be several competitive prize categories as well. OU Student House We will be discussing the construction schedule for the first house. Renovation Work To help create more volunteer opportunities for students, this semester we are going to expand our mission and begin doing renovation work on existing houses in Norman. Door Prizes We will be giving out some cool door prizes. Hope to see you all there! If you want to walk but haven't gotten sponsors yet, it's not too late! You can download a copy of the pledge form from www.ou.edu/habitat (click on "1999 Walk for Habitat"). To add a bit of excitement, we have several incentives for the walkers. Any walker who collects over $50 in pledges will recieve a FREE Habitat t-shirt, AND, we will be awarding CASH PRIZES in the categories "Most Dollars Pledged" and "Greatest Number of Pledges". The prize amounts for each category are: 1st Place-- $50, 2nd Place--$25, 3-5th Place: $10. Any OU student is eligible to compete for the cash prizes. Any walker may recieve a t-shirt. One student has already collected over $500 from 10 sponsors, so don't wait to start getting pledges. The walk will be held this Saturday, January 30th at 11:00 AM. Registration begins at 10:30 (be sure to register so you get your t-shirt!). We will be walking from the North Oval of the OU campus (Boyd and University) to the building site at 611 E. Commanche. Following the walk at 12:00 we will have a ground-breaking ceremony at the building site. I hope to see all of you there! We raised over $1,300 to help build the first OU Habitat house! Many thanks to the 15 or so people who braved the cloudy, misty weather to show their support for Habitat. (Hopefully next year it will be nice and sunny.) No word yet on the fund-raising prize winners, but we will keep you informed. We are now at approximately 55% of our goal of raising $25,000. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Construction should begin soon. Right now we are waiting for the slab to be poured. After that, we will need 10-15 volunteers nearly every Saturday. Rita Patel will be in charge of scheduling people for the work days. If you are interested in building, please contact her at 321-2337 or [log in to unmask] It is not yet clear how we will handle the scheduling, but everyone please be flexible and understanding if you aren't able to work the day you want or it rains or whatever. It may work out to be easiest if we schedule people no more than a week or two in advance. We are especially interested in student groups or other organizations who can do some fundraising to help with the building costs. After all, the biggest limit to how much building we can do is money. If just having excited volunteers were enough, we'd have built 10 houses already! The easiest way to do this is to ask a local eating establishment for a donation. Both Subway and McDonalds have a long history of providing food for us. You would then pick up lunch at the appointed time and deliver it to the work site. It's not at all difficult. In fact, it would take no more than 2 hours. About one hour to solicit the donation, and one more hour to pick up and deliver the food. It is also possible to cook it yourself (and it doesn't have to be fancy at all). Sandwiches and potatoe chips are fine. Of course filet mignon would also be fine. Roofing is hard work. :-) There will be approximately 15 people working on Saturday. My corn may have gotten washed a bit and since it isn't up yet I may have some rearranged rows. I got more water in the workshop of the barn than I have ever had before but it should dry up. The entire south wall was wet for about three or 4 ft wide the length of the barn. Also, the toilet stool would barely flush as my two tanks are undoubtedly full to the max with surface water. That happened one time before last year and they drain out in a day or two. Trevor is chirping 2 syllable words and is pretty funny. He also can climb an 6 foot ladder to a slide by himself and scared Meister to death watching him. Take care, and thanks again for the HH help. Comments: To: [log in to unmask] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.05 [en] (Win95; I) Rachael and I met last Wednesday to discuss our plans for the rest of this semester and for the coming year. Sorry we have not been getting in touch with all of you on a regular basis. I am emailing with all the latest info. now. Norman Habitat has a booth for all of the men's basketball games at Lloyd Noble. This booth will probably be turned over to us next semester. We will be having informational booths set up in the Union on Dec. 6th and 8th. Rachael and I will be manning these during lunch. On the 8th, there will be a general meeting at 8PM. The room number will be given in the future. Basically, you guys have to remember our duty is to raise money for Norman Habitat. If you have any ideas on how to do so please email or call me. I still plan on having a clothing drive next semester with proceeds benefitting us. For now, I am trying to find people to work our booth this Friday and Saturday. We need about 4 people. Sorry this is such short notice; it will not be like this next semester for sure (this is one of the reasons why I want us to be in charge of the booth). I hope to use part of the general meeting for scheduling work spots for the booth. Anyway. You would have to be at Lloyd Noble on Friday at 6PM and then 4PM on Saturday. If you can work either day, call me at 321-8487 tomorrow by 4PM. After that call me at 359-0659, which is where I will be for the break. Please get in touch with me as soon as possible. Have an excellent Thanksgiving and be safe!
